Rock drops two at regional crossover

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday to Charleston (3-2) and West Liberty (3-0) at the Atlantic Region crossover.

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday to the University of Charleston and West Liberty University on day two of the Atlantic Region crossover in West Liberty, West Virginia.

Slippery Rock opened the day with a narrow loss in five sets to Charleston (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 18-25, 15-10) followed by a three-set defeat against host West Liberty (25-20, 26-24, 25-18).

The losses drop Slippery Rock's record to 3-5 on the season overall. Saturday marked the conclusion of the majority of The Rock's 2018 non-conference schedule, as 18 of SRU's remaining 19 matches will be Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contests.

Senior Beth Stumpf and freshman Gabby Huck led The Rock's attack Saturday. Stumpf tallied a pair of double-doubles, finishing with 27 total kills and 23 digs over eight sets while Huck had 24 kills on the day.

Sophomore Erinn Kahoe compiled nine total blocks over the two matches as well as 17 kills. Kahoe exits the weekend as The Rock's season leader in blocks with 28.

Junior setter Zoe Rivet had 60 total assists against Charleston and West Liberty to move into ninth place in Rock history with 1,353 career assists.

Slippery Rock will look to end its three-match losing a streak with a victory 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at West Chester University in what will be both teams PSAC opener.

• Stumpf added 10 kills and 12 digs as well while senior Shayla Ray and Kahoe finished just shy of the double-digit kill mark with nine each.
• Kahoe also recorded a team-high five blocks (one solo / four assisted).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Slippery Rock took the first set, 25-22, thanks in part to four kills apiece in the game by Huck and Stumpf. UC battled back to take the following two sets 25-17 and 25-19. SRU stayed alive with a key 25-18 win in the fourth, but Charleston jumped out to a 7-3 lead The Rock could never overcome in the fifth set as the Golden Eagles held on for a 15-10 match-clinching win.

Atlantic Region Crossover Match 4
West Liberty 3 – Slippery Rock 0
25-20, 26-24, 25-18
West Liberty, W. Va. | ARC

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• As has been the case for the majority of the season, Stumpf was once again solid for The Rock as the senior outside hitter posted 17 kills, a .229 attack percentage and 11 digs against the Hilltoppers.
• Kahoe added eight kills on just 20 attempts with a mere three errors (.250) to go with four blocks (one solo / three assisted).
• Rivet had 35 assists, her third highest total in a match this season.
• Willard made 21 digs and has now recorded at least 20 digs in five of her last six matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Slippery Rock played the Hilltoppers tight in the first two sets, losing both games by a total of just seven points (25-20, 26-24), but couldn't avoid the straight-set defeat in the third after West Liberty closed out the match with a 5-0 run early in the third that gave WLU a cushion it would never surrender in the 25-18 win.
