Johnson’s late goal pushes Rock past Walsh, 1-0

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team defeated Walsh Saturday night in non-conference play, 1-0. Madison Johnson scored a goal in the 76th minute and Emma Yoder earned a shutout in goal.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Walsh University Saturday night in non-conference play, 1-0. Madison Johnson scored a goal in the 76th minute and Emma Yoder earned a shutout in goal.
 
Neither team could take control in the first half, but Walsh led in shots on goal at the end of the first, 4-0.
 
Yoder made four outstanding saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
 
In the 53rd minute, Tyler Spence aimed to give The Rock a lead when she fired a shot on target, but Walsh goalkeeper, Mickey McClanahan made the save. Just seconds later, Brooke Testa took two shots, but one was blocked and the other went wide right.
 
The Cavaliers responded with a shot at 58:58, but Yoder was there to clean it up.
 
With both teams playing very well defensively, it seemed that the game was headed for overtime, but at 76:37 Skye Kramer fed Johnson and she sent a header past McClanahan to give SRU a 1-0 advantage.
 
Walsh looked to tie the game in the last fourteen minutes of play, sending three shots on goal, but Yoder made all three saves and Slippery Rock held on for the victory.
 
WU outshot SRU, 14-5, and had the advantage in shots on goal, 8-5, but it was The Rock who claimed the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: ROCK 1, WU 0; 76:37: Johnson fired a header in net off a pass from Kramer.
 
GAME NOTES
  • It was the third time this season Slippery Rock won a game, 1-0.
  • All five of SRU's victories have been shutouts.
  • The Rock have only surrendered two goals in six games.
  • Johnson tallied her first goal of the season while Kramer recorded her second assist of 2018.
  • Yoder is 2-0 in goal to begin her Slippery Rock career with two shutouts. In both games, she's tallied eight saves.
  • Slippery Rock now leads the PSAC in in shutout victories with five.
 
UP NEXT
The Rock will return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play 4 p.m. Tuesday against Edinboro at James Egli Field.
