Rock defeats California (Pa.), 3-0

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team defeated California (Pa.), 3-0, Sunday afternoon in a PSAC contest at James Egli Field. Sofia Harrison and Shannon McIntyre registered their first goals of the season, while Kaitlyn Barackman netted her fourth score of 2018.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated California University of Pennsylvania, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at James Egli Field. Sofia Harrison and Shannon McIntyre registered their first goals of the season, while Kaitlyn Barackman netted her fourth score of 2018.
 
All three of Slippery Rock's goals were in the first period of action and in the second period, SRU's defense held off the Vulcans attack en route to the victory.
 
At 14:28, Harrison chipped the ball into the net to give The Rock a 1-0 lead. Skye Kramer recorded the assist on the score.
 
In the 35th minute, Barackman received a long free kick pass into the box, and after beating her defender, she fired it past CAL goalie, Reilly McGlumphy for the score.
 
Later in the period, after a foul in the box, McIntyre shot the penalty kick into the net to give SRU a 3-0 advantage into the break.
 
Seven of Slippery Rock's nine shots in the first period were on goal. SRU led the entire contest in shots, 22-2, and in shots on goal, 13-0.
 
The Rock kept up the barrage of shots throughout the second period adding 13 more. Among all Rock shooters were Harrison, McIntyre, Barackman, Kramer, Sarah Blue, Jordyn Minda, Brooke Testa, Megan Sikora, Reagan Reeves and Tyler Spence.
 
Goalkeeper Kylie Downs was barely tested in the contest playing all 90 minutes, but did not have to face a shot on goal.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 9-4-2 overall and 7-4-2 in PSAC play while California falls to 1-11-2 and 0-11-2 in league games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: ROCK 1, CAL 0; 14:28: Harrison scored off a chip on a pass from Kramer.
GOAL: ROCK 2, CAL 0; 34:36: Barackman dribbled by her defender and beat the keeper.
GOAL: ROCK 3, CAL 0; 41:03: McIntyre scored on a penalty kick.
 
GAME NOTES
  • It was the second time this season Slippery Rock surrendered less than three shots
  • It was also the second time this season that SRU had registered more than 20 shots and the third time in 2018 that The Rock have posted at least 12 shots on goal.
  • Harrison managed her first collegiate goal and her first game-winning goal.
  • The Rock is fourth in the conference in shutouts after recording their eighth Sunday.
  • Downs is tied for fifth in the PSAC among goalkeepers in shutouts with five.
