Rock ties Tiffin in home-opener, 1-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team tied Tiffin 1-1 its home-opener Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team tied Tiffin University 1-1 in its home-opening contest Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Kyle Boyer scored The Rock's only goal in the matchup about halfway through the first period. Tiffin answered back however with a score of its own in the second period to knot up the game 1-1 and send it into overtime. Neither team was able to take advantage during the extra time.

In 29th minute Sean Tinney fed Boyer with a pass from 15 yards out, which Boyer deposited into the lower right corner of the net for the score giving SRU the 1-0 lead. It was Boyer's second goal of the season. For Tinney, he recorded his third assist of the year and now has at least one assist in back-to-back games.

The Rock never threatened again in the first half, but Tiffin's offense continued to put pressure on SRU's tough backline recording one shot on goal at 38:33, but Slippery Rock keeper Jonathan Sharp was there to make the save. The Rock held its 1-0 lead into the break.

At 70:13, Tiffin was able to get on the scoreboard when Charles Rolls played a ball over the defense from 40 yards out, where Alexander Wagener sent it past Sharp for the game-tying goal.

Slippery Rock's last chance to take the lead was at 88:45 when Boyer fired a shot on target that was saved by Tiffin keeper Cary Wilson. However, both teams remained level into overtime.

The Rock did not muster any shots in either overtime period. SRU's defense however staved off five total shots during the two overtime periods, but Tiffin was unable to take advantage. The game's final whistle was blown with the game ending in the 1-1 draw.

It was a phenomenal performance by an SRU backline that included Devin Hoffman, Ethan Augustin, Kenton Keeslar and Patrick Sullivan. The Dragons fired 21 shots, with seven being on goal and only one finding its mark.

Goalkeeper Sharp made six saves on seven shots faced in the contest.

Slippery Rock's draw moves its record to 1-1-1 on the season. The Rock is back in action again next Friday when it travels to Burnaby, British Columbia to face Simon Fraser University. Game time is set for 10:30 p.m.
