PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team recorded its first win of the season when it shut out Lake Erie College 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Slattery Field.

The Rock (1-1) tallied one goal in the first half when Werth put SRU ahead early 1-0. Slippery Rock's
Kyle Boyer later found the net in the second half solidifying the 2-0 win.

Lake Erie (1-1) could only muster four shots on goal, as SRU goalkeeper
Jonathan Sharp was stellar, recording all four saves.

At 18:47, Slippery Rock tallied its first goal of 2017 when
Sean Tinney sent a pass to Werth that he put into the back of the net for the score. For Werth, it was his second goal of his SRU career, and first of the year.Â
Slippery Rock entered halftime with the 1-0 lead and shortly after the break, improved upon that lead when Tinney found Boyer and he sent one past the keeper for the score at 46:36. It was Boyer's second goal in a Rock uniform and first of the season. Tinney's two assists were the first of his SRU career.

Any chance of Lake Erie mounting a late comeback was snuffed out in the 65
th minute when The Storm's Joseph Munaretto sent one at the net, but it was saved by Sharp. SRU held on for the victory, 2-0.

The Rock held advantages in in shots (12-10) and shots on goal (7-4).

The last time SRU blanked an opponent was Oct. 8, 2016 when it beat East Stroudsburg University 1-0 at James Egli Field.

The win improves SRU's all-time record against Lake Erie to 2-1-1 and is The Rock's first victory over The Storm since Oct. 16, 2012.

Slippery Rock's next game will be against Tiffin University in a non-conference matchup in SRU's home-opener 2:30 p.m. Friday at James Egli Field.
