Rock loses to Millersville in five sets

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost in five sets to Millersville Friday night at home in a PSAC match.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost in five sets to Millersville University Friday night at Morrow Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.

The Rock took the opening set, 25-16, before falling 25-15, 25-21 in the second and third sets. SRU proceeded to force a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth before Millersville halted Slippery Rock's comeback bid with a 15-11 win the deciding set.

Slippery Rock drops to 8-7 on the year overall and 0-3 in league matches with the loss. Millersville improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in PSAC competition with the victory.

Erinn Kahoe paced SRU with a team-high 13 kills and a .323 attack percentage. Fellow freshman Stephanie Jacobsen added 11 kills as well while Brooke Bostwick registered 10 kills on just 17 attempts and two errors for a .471 attack percentage in addition to tallying three blocks.

Zoe Rivet served up three aces and passed out 31 assists as well as making 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Rivet's 31 assists were a season-high and the third highest single-match total of her collegiate career. Fellow setter Haley Defibaugh had 16 assists, 19 digs and one ace for a double-double of her own.

Courtney Oberlander, who entered the match ranked 10th in the nation in digs per set and 15th in total digs, had a match-best 30 digs in what was her third contest of the season with at least 30 digs.

Shayla Ray rounded out The Rock's top performers with seven kills and a match-high four blocks.

After taking the opening set, Slippery Rock played Millersville to a 3-3 tie in the second before the Marauders took control of the set with an 11-3 run that opened up a 14-6 advantage en route to an eventual 25-15 victory. SRU took the first two points of the third set thanks to back-to-back kills by Bostwick, but Millersville countered by rattling off five consecutive points to take a 5-2 lead it would never relinquish in a 25-21 triumph.

However, The Rock refused to quit and managed to force a fifth set with a great performance in the fourth that saw Bostwick produce four kills while Kahoe and Ray both chipped in three kills in a 25-22 victory.

SRU appeared poised to finish off the comeback when it jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the final set, but the Marauders chipped away at The Rock's lead with a 6-0 run that put the visitors on top 7-5. Slippery Rock stayed close with Millersville through the remainder of the set, but MU was able to close out the match by taking four straight points for a 15-11 match-deciding win.

Erin Harman led the Marauder attack with 21 kills. Lindsey Blevins added 15 kills as well in the win.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Friday's defeat with a win against Shippensburg on Saturday. Opening serve from Morrow Field House is scheduled for 1 p.m.
