Rock battles Gannon to 0-0 draw

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team tied Gannon 0-0 Sunday afternoon at James Egli Field in a PSAC contest.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team tied Gannon University 0-0 Sunday afternoon at James Egli Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
 
Offensively, The Rock managed one shot on goal each from Igor McVeagh, George Oakley, Anthony Werth and Patrick Sullivan. Goalkeeper Jonathan Sharp was fantastic recording seven saves on seven chances.
 
The draw moves SRU's record to 1-3-3 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play. Gannon's record is now 4-4-1 overall and 3-0-1 in league play.
 
Slippery Rock nearly took the lead right out of the gate when Werth fired a shot that goalkeeper Jorge Hernandez saved.
 
SRU almost took the lead again at 18:29 when Liam Gasparotto took a shot that was blocked by the Gannon defense.
 
Sharp never faltered in the first half making three saves and keeping the score 0-0 heading into halftime.
 
After the break, at 53:38, SRU nearly took the lead when a foul in the box allowed Oakley to shoot a penalty kick. Oakley sent one toward the lower right post that Hernandez saved, keeping the score 0-0.
 
The Rock almost took the lead again late in regulation at 88:58 when Oakley fired a corner kick into the box. After a couple deflections, Sean Tinney let a shot loose that got blocked. Thirty seconds later, Kenton Keeslar sent one high over the goal, and the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.
 
During the first overtime period, Sharp made a game-saving stop in the 97th minute when George Stannard broke free going one-on-one with him. Stannard let one loose and Sharp made a kick save that kept the game level at 0-0.
 
In the second overtime period, SRU managed one shot that went high from Oakley at 105:25.
 
Neither team could take advantage afterword and the game ended in the 0-0 draw.
 
SRU held the advantage in total shots 14-13.
 
It was the first time since 2012 that SRU has registered back-to-back tie games. On Oct. 3, 2012 The Rock tied Bloomsburg 0-0, and followed that up with a 0-0 draw at East Stroudsburg on Oct. 6, 2012.
 
Up next, Slippery Rock will continue its two-game homestand against Seton Hill 1 p.m. Wednesday at James Egli Field.
