SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest against Seton Hill University Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field. SRU's
Tyler McCarthy recorded the team's lone goal in the loss.
Seton Hill took the lead in the first five minutes of play, but Slippery Rock answered back fifteen minutes into the second half to tie it. Unfortunately, the Griffins scored another to make it 2-1 game minutes later to seal the victory.
The loss drops SRU's record to 1-4-3 overall and 0-1-2 in league play, while Seton Hill improves to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games.
SRU found itself down early at 4:56 when Henrik Berg received a pass from Tom Urquhart that he put into the lower right side of the net for a score. Seton Hill took the 1-0 lead.
The Rock's best chance to tie the game in the first period was at 38:09 when
Anthony Werth sent one toward goal, but goalkeeper Austin Iddon recorded the save. SHU took its 1-0 advantage into the break.
Slippery Rock kept the pressure on coming out of halftime and at 59:58,
Kenton Keeslar fed McCarthy a pass that he put past the keeper for the score. It was McCarthy's first goal of his Slippery Rock career, and Keeslar's first assist of 2017. The goal tied the game, 1-1.
Just five minutes later, at 64:27, Berg got loose again and received a pass from Alex Dyson that he deposited into the back of the net to give the Griffins the 2-1 advantage.
SRU turned up the intensity in the final minute and was able to fire three shots; one from
Kyle Boyer that was blocked, another from
Sean Tinney that was blocked and a
Cory Olix shot at 89:35 nearly tied the game, but Iddon made the save. Seton Hill held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Rock's next match will be a PSAC game on the road at East Stroudsburg University 1 p.m. Saturday.
