Rock loses at Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1

The Slippery Rock volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost to Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-12) Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at the Sports Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock exits the weekend with an 8-6 overall record and an 0-2 mark in PSAC competition. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 league matches with the win.

Shayla Ray paced The Rock's offensive attack with 10 kills on just 17 attempts. Ray, who also tallied two block assists and one ace against the Mountain Cats, had just one attack error as she finished the match with an impressive .529 attack percentage.

Stephanie Jacobsen added eight kills while Brooke Bostwick and Kelsey Boyle totaled seven kills each.

Zoe Rivet recorded a double-double of 18 assists and 10 digs with fellow setter Haley Defibaugh also adding 16 assists. Courtney Oberlander made a match-high 22 digs and now ranks eighth in program history in career digs with 1,929.

The opener was a back-and-forth affair for the majority of the set, but Pitt-Johnstown went on a 5-1 run late to take a commanding 23-18 lead that it would never relinquish in an eventual 25-21 victory.

Slippery Rock used a pair of 4-0 spurts early in the second set to build a 17-12 lead. The Mountain Cats fought back thanks in part to a 5-0 run late that cut The Rock's lead down to just one point at 22-21, but SRU was able to finish off the set thanks to kills from Bostwick and Erinn Kahoe as well as a UPJ attack error to earn a 25-23 win and even the match at 1-1.

However, the third and fourth sets were controlled by Pitt-Johnstown as UPJ took advantage of sizable runs in both sets to record 25-14 and 25-12 victories that sealed the match.

Caitlin Vrable had 11 kills and five blocks (one solo / four assisted) to lead the Mountain Cats.

Slippery Rock will make its long-awaited home debut when it hosts Millersville University Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
