Rock ties Lock Haven in PSAC match, 2-2

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team tied Lock Haven Friday afternoon 2-2 in SRU’s first conference game of 2017 at the Stern Athletic Complex.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team tied Lock Haven University Friday afternoon 2-2 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at the Stern Athletic Complex.
 
Anthony Werth and Igor McVeagh registered The Rock's goals, while George Oakley picked up an assist. Goalkeeper Jonathan Sharp recorded three saves in the draw.
 
The tie moves SRU's record to 1-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. Lock Haven is now 4-1-3 and 2-0-1 in league matches.
 
The Bald Eagles jumped out to an early lead during the fifth minute when Christian Wieand netted a score off a free kick from thirty-five yards out. LHU took the 1-0 lead.
 
SRU nearly leveled the score at 36:09 when Connor Jobe sent a header toward the goal, but Lock Haven keeper, Troy Teresak made the save.
 
The Rock did not manage to crack the scoreboard until the 54th minute when Werth struck one that beat the keeper to the far post, tying the game, 1-1. It was his second goal of 2017.
 
Just six minutes later, at 60:28, Oakley crossed a ball into the box that McVeagh sent into the goal via header to give SRU the 2-1 lead. It was McVeagh's first goal in his Slippery Rock career and Oakley's first assist of the season.
 
Lock Haven would later tie the game at 71:10 when Brian Flatter received a cross form Alec Mapoy, that he headed into the goal, leveling the score at 2-2.
 
Neither team could take advantage throughout the rest of regulation as the game headed into overtime.
 
During the first overtime period, Lock Haven nearly won the game at 98:04 when Reggie Holt fired a header over the crossbar, but the game remained tied.
 
Neither SRU, nor Lock Haven registered a shot for the rest of the game as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
 
The Rock and Lock Haven tied in both shots (8) and shots on goal (5).
 
SRU's next match will be a home conference game 3:30 p.m. Sunday when it battles Gannon University at James Egli Field.
