Rock shutout by Ashland, 2-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup against Ashland 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match against Ashland 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field.
 
The Rock outshot Ashland 16-15, however the Eagles registered two goals in the second period en route to the victory. George Oakley recorded three shots on goal while SRU goalkeeper, Jonathan Sharp, tallied four saves on six shots faced.
 
Neither team could gain an edge in the first period. The Rock had a chance at 33:57 when Igor McVeagh sent a header toward the net, but AU goalkeeper, Ameer Mubarak made the save.
 
In the 42nd minute, Cory Olix put a corner kick into the box that Patrick Sullivan headed over the goal, but the score still remained level at 0-0 into the break.
 
Just 10 minutes into the second half, Ashland's Andrew Pearson played a header into the net off a free kick to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
 
Slippery Rock nearly tied the game at 57:21 when Oakley sent a twisting shot from 15 yards out, but keeper Mubarak corralled it for the save.
 
The Eagles made the score 2-0 in the 76th minute when Justin Libertowski shot one that was deflected to Jacob Koehler who fired another shot into the back of the net.
 
The Rock's final chance to get on the scoreboard was at 87:59 when Oakley sent one toward the goal that keeper Mubarak saved. Ashland held on for the 2-0 win.
 
With the loss, Slippery Rock's overall record falls to 1-3-1, while Ashland improves to 4-2-0.
 
Up next, SRU starts Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Lock Haven 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
