Rock comes up short in losses to Edinboro

The Slippery Rock softball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Edinboro in PSAC West play Friday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Friday afternoon.
 
The Fighting Scots came out on top in the back-and-forth 11-inning opener, 5-4, before earning the doubleheader sweep with a 2-1 victory in game two.
 
With the wins, Edinboro improves to 13-20 overall and 6-10 in PSAC play, while Slippery Rock falls to 17-22 overall and 7-11 in league action.
 
Between games of the doubleheader, seniors Caitlin Baxter, Carly DeRose and Nicole Siciliano were honored for their achievements over their four-year careers.
 
Emily Nagle paced the offense for the day, going 3-for-8 with two RBI and a stolen base. Baxter also went 3-for-8 with an RBI.
 
GAME ONE: Edinboro 5, Slippery Rock 4 (11 innings)
The Fighting Scots got out to an early lead when they scored two runs in the first inning, one on a Slippery Rock error and the other on a wild pitch.
 
In the seventh inning, Nagle tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run single that scored Hannah Nestor and Siciliano.
 
Neither team manufactured a run in extra innings until the 10th inning when Olivia Jankowski scored Emily Osterberg from third base on a ground-out RBI.
 
Slippery Rock answered that run in the bottom of the inning when Alexa Guglielmino scored on an Edinboro error.
 
The Fighting Scots recorded two runs in the 11th, but SRU was only able to get one back in the bottom of the inning when Kailey Myers scored Lauren Hawley on a single to right field.
 
Siciliano and Myers had two hits apiece in the loss, while Nagle's two RBI led SRU's scoring efforts.
 
Paige Flore took the loss after pitching the final 4.2 innings of the game. She struck out one and allowed three runs. DeRose recored five strikeouts and gave up two runs in the first 6.1 innings.
 
GAME TWO: Edinboro 2, Slippery Rock 1
Once again, Edinboro took an early lead in game two when Brooke Callaghan recorded an RBI single to right field to give her team a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Rock tied it up in the third inning with Baxter's RBI double to left field. Baxter has now recorded nine doubles on the year.
 
Jessica Hyland's solo home run to centerfield in the fifth inning lifted the Fighting Scots to the 2-1 victory.
 
Brooke Dawson was tagged with the loss for The Rock after recording six strikeouts in a complete game.
 
The losses remove Slippery Rock from playoff contention. The team will wrap up the season tomorrow at Gannon University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
