Season ends as Rock falls to Gannon

The SRU softball team saw its season end with a pair of losses to Gannon Sunday afternoon.

ERIE, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team saw its season end with a pair of losses to Gannon University Sunday afternoon from McConnell Family Stadium in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock scored the first run of game one, but Gannon went on to score 10 unanswered runs to win 10-1. Gannon also took game two over The Rock, 4-2.    

The losses drop Slippery Rock to 17-24 overall and 7-13 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Gannon improves to 27-12 overall and 14-6 in PSAC play.

GAME ONE: Gannon 10, Slippery Rock 1
In game one, Caitlin Baxter cracked a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give SRU a 1-0 lead over Gannon.

The Golden Knights strung together three multi-run innings from the second – fourth to take command of the game and lead The Rock, 7-1. 

Gannon added to their lead in the sixth inning when Maria Taliani had a three-run homer to make it 10-1.

Lauren Hawley had two hits in the loss, including a double to lead The Rock, while Baxter recorded her fourth home run of the season.

Carly DeRose took the loss for Slippery Rock after four innings of work. DeRose struck out one in the loss. Paige Flore put in 1.2 innings of work and also recorded one strikeout.

GAME TWO: GANNON 4, Slippery Rock 2
In game two, Gannon got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Taliani and Kellyn Perich's RBIs.

The Rock cut it to one on Alexa Guglielmino's RBI double to right center in the fifth inning. Gannon added another run in the bottom of the inning on Taliani's second homer of the afternoon.

To start the sixth inning, Hawley smacked her fourth homer of the season to cut it to 3-2. Gannon plated one more run in the bottom of the inning to give the final score of 4-2.

Hawley, Megan Brown, Nicole Siciliano and Allie Fischer had two hits apiece for The Rock, while Hawley and Guglielmino had RBIs.

Brooke Dawson was tagged with the loss after recording three strikeouts.
