SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team defeated Cheyney University, 3-0, Friday night at Morrow Field House in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition.
Slippery Rock (10-14, 2-10 PSAC) took the opening set from the Wolves (0-20, 0-13 PSAC), 25-12, before recording 25-8 and 25-10 victories to finish off the shutout victory.
The Rock registered team season-highs Friday night in both attack percentage (.329) and aces (14).
The 14 aces are tied for the most by a Rock team in a single game over the last six years.
Zoe Rivet was responsible for four of the aces with
Hanna Lombardo and
Danielle Bywalski adding three each followed by
Shayla Ray and
Rachel Schulz with two apiece.
On a night in which 15 different athletes saw the floor for Slippery Rock it was freshman
Gabrielle Barnes that led the attack with a match-best eight kills.
Erinn Kahoe and
Brooke Bostwick added seven kills and two blocks each as well.
The trio of Bywalksi,
Stephanie Jacobsen and
Kelsey Boyle all tallied three kills each while
Shannon Ream and
Lamija Alisic rounded out The Rock's kills leaders with two apiece.
Lombardo produced a match-best 11 assists followed closely by
Haley Defibaugh with 10 assists of her own.
Courtney Oberlander made 12 digs and is now just 29 away from passing Bev Rea (1991-94) for second place in program history for digs in a career.
Friday's match was never in question. The Wolves led briefly, at 2-1 in the first set, but Slippery Rock rattled off six consecutive points to take a commanding 7-2 lead in the first set. SRU did not trail the rest of the night as it built leads of at least 13 points in each set on the way to its seventh 3-0 victory of the year.
Cheyney was led by the combination of Alaiya Cave and Jamera Stanciel. The pair each recorded three kills and one block in the loss.
Slippery Rock held its annual Dig for the Cure fundraiser on Friday. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, a non-profit organization that uses 100 percent of its funds for breast cancer research.
SRU will now look for its second consecutive win when it hosts West Chester 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House. Prior to the match, Slippery Rock will recognize the 2017 senior class of Alisic, Bostwick, Defibaugh, Lombardo and Oberlander for the contributions to the program over their careers.
