Rock blanked by Mercyhurst in PSAC game, 5-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team dropped a 5-0 PSAC contest at Mercyhurst Wednesday afternoon. George Oakley and Cory Olix registered the only shots on goal.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a 5-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game at Mercyhurst University Wednesday afternoon. George Oakley and Cory Olix tallied the only shots on goal.
 
The Lakers scored two goals in the first period and three in the second to lift them past The Rock. Slippery Rock nearly got on the board 10 times in the second half, but Mercyhurst held on for the victory.
 
The loss drops SRU's record to 4-8-3 overall and 3-4-2 in league games, while Mercyhurst improves to 10-4-0 and 6-2-0 in PSAC contests.
 
At 22:22, Mercyhurst got on the board when Fjodor van Kipperslui was fouled in the box and was able to complete the penalty kick to make it a 1-0 lead.
 
Two minutes before the half, Connor Wilkinson received a through ball from Pat Darby that he deposited into the net for the score to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
 
Just 12 seconds out of the break, Pablo Vela received a pass from Connor Wilkinson that he fired into the net for the score.
 
Slippery Rock nearly got on the board at 51:06 when Oakley fired a ball on target that goalkeeper Martin Jarc saved.
 
At 51:23, it was Olix who sent another ball toward the net, but Jarc saved it again. Later in the 59th minute, Oakley sent a shot that was stopped again by Jarc.
 
Slippery Rock fired 10 total shots in a 10 minute span, but were not able to find the back of the net.
 
In the 61st minute, Michael Blancato made it a 4-0 game off a pass from van Kipperslui. The Lakers then scored again in the 61st minute when van Kipperslui found Franco Soldati who deposited one into the net for the score. Mercyhurst held on to its 5-0 lead en route to the victory.
 
Slippery Rock will return home to face No. 12 West Chester 3:30 p.m. Saturday for Senior Day. Prior to the game, The Rock will honor the careers of Kyle Boyer, Tyler McCarthy, Steven Rerick, Jonathan Sharp and Patrick Sullivan.
