McCarthy nets three in 4-0 win over California (Pa.)

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team defeated California (Pa.) today, 4-0. Tyler McCarthy tallied three goals in the victory.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated California University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play, 4-0. Tyler McCarthy recorded three goals in the win.
 
The Rock scored one goal in the first half and three goals in the second period while playing stellar defense. California was only able to muster two shots on goal.
 
With the win, SRU improves to 4-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in PSAC play, while California falls to 1-11-0 and 1-6-0 in league games.
 
Slippery Rock got on the scoreboard early at 20:26 when the Vulcans failed to the clear the ball out of danger and George Oakley fed McCarthy a pass that he fired into the back of the net for a score.
 
Justin Minda almost made it 2-0 game before the break at 35:06 when he took a shot that was blocked, but The Rock took its 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
At 49:14, McCarthy received a cross from Oakley and headed it into the goal to make it a 2-0 lead.
 
McCarthy, a California (Pa.) transfer, got himself a hat trick against his former team at 60:24 when Oakley crossed another ball into the box. McCarthy then deposited it into the net to give SRU a 3-0 lead. Oakley assisted on all three of McCarthy's goals and now has seven assists this season. McCarthy's scores were his fourth, fifth and sixth of 2017.
 
Sean Tinney got in on the scoring action at 70:08 when Minda fed him a pass inside the box that Tinney fired into the net for a goal. It was Tinney's first goal of his SRU career. Slippery Rock took a 4-0 lead.
 
SRU blanked California with three different goalkeepers today. Jonathan Sharp, Matt Hunsberger and Steven Rerick each recorded time in net. Hunsberger and Sharp tallied one save apiece in the victory.
 
The Rock outshot California 14-5 and also held the advantage in shots on goal, 8-2.
 
Slippery Rock will continue its two-game road swing 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a conference match at Mercyhurst.
