SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team lost 4-1 to 22nd ranked Millersville University Friday afternoon at James Egli Field.
Luke Picchi recorded The Rock's lone goal.
After surrendering a goal early, SRU tied the game up just a few minutes later. However, the Marauders registered three more goals in the first half and held on for the victory.
The loss put dropped The Rock to 3-7-3 overall and 2-3-2 in league play, while Millersville improves to 9-3-1 overall and 5-2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games.
Millersville's Chase Flickinger scored his fifth goal of the season in just the fourth minute to give MU the 1-0 lead.
At 7:27, Picchi got loose and sent one past the keeper to tie the game up, 1-1. It was Picchi's second goal of 2017 and second score as a member of SRU men's soccer team.
Slippery Rock nearly took the lead when
Cory Olix fired one on target, but goalkeeper Cody Breen made the save.
The Marauders did take the lead at 34:39 when Jacob Gosselin received a pass from Dylan Fogerty and put it into the net.
Millersville made it a two-goal lead at 35:17 when Gosselin got another pass from Jesse Zimmerman and deposited it into the net to make it a 3-1 lead.
Nearing the break, at 43:42, Flickinger tallied his second score of the game when Zimmerman passed him one in the box that he sent past goalkeeper
Jonathan Sharp for the score. Millersville took its 4-1 lead into halftime.
In the 57th minute
Tyler McCarthy nearly narrowed the score when he sent a header that just went wide of the net.
The Marauders almost made it a 5-1 lead when Ryan Phelps sent a header on target, but Sharp made the save.
SRU and MU finished the game tied 8-8 in total shots. In the second half, Millersville recorded just two shots, while The Rock fired just one. The Marauders held on for the 4-1 win.
Slippery Rock will look to snap its two-game losing streak when it travels to California (Pa.) for a conference match 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
