SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team secured its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Lock Haven University Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.
Slippery Rock got out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-20 and 25-21 in the first and second sets before Lock Haven stormed back with wins of 25-23 and 29-27 in the third and fourth sets to tie up the match 2-2. Slippery Rock took the closely contested fifth set 15-12 to earn the win over its conference foe. Â
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 8-7 overall and 1-1 in PSAC action. Lock Haven falls to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Beth Stumpf led The Rock with 17 kills, while
Brooke Bostwick (11) and
Leah Jones (10) also notched double-digit kills. Bostwick also had a career-best seven blocks in the win.
Courtney Oberlander also reached a career-best with 42 digs, while Jones had 22 and Stumpf had 15.
Haley Defibaugh passed out 29 assists and
Zoe Rivet continued her impressive rookie campaign with another 27 assists.
Slippery Rock maintained a steady lead for the entire first set until Lock Haven scored four straight points midway through the set to cut it to one, 17-16. The hosts outscored LHU 8-4 down the stretch to come away with a 25-20 win.
In the second set, Lock Haven held a 12-11 lead until SRU outscored them 7-3 to take an 18-15 lead. LHU responded with a four-point run to take back the lead, 19-18. The Rock closed out the set with a 7-2 run highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Jones to win 25-21.
Lock Haven maintained a lead for the start of the third set until SRU had a four-point run to take the lead at 16-15. LHU answered with a four-point run of its own to take back a 19-16 lead. The Rock then scored six unanswered points behind kills of Stumpf and Bostwick and a service ace from
Kristen C. Smith to lead the Bald Eagles, 22-19. LHU answered SRU's run with five straight points and exchanged kills with SRU to close out the match with a 25-23 win.
Slippery Rock held a slight lead for the entire fourth set until Lock Haven notched three straight kills to tie up 24-24. The teams battled back and forth until the Bald Eagles closed out the set with three straight points on SRU errors to tie up the match 2-2 with a 29-27 win.
The fifth set was a close one that featured five ties, including one that SRU broke at 12-12 with three-straight points to win 15-12 and win the match 3-2.
