Rock splits on Day 2 at WJU/WLU Invite

The Slippery Rock volleyball team beat UVa-Wise 3-0 before falling to host West Liberty 3-1 Saturday at the at the Wheeling Jesuit/West Liberty Invitational.

WHEELING, W.V.- ­The Slippery Rock University volleyball team beat UVa-Wise 3-0 before falling to host West Liberty 3-1 Saturday at the at the Wheeling Jesuit/West Liberty Invitational in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Slippery Rock went 1-3 at the WJU/WLU Invitational to move to 6-6 overall.

Leah Jones led The Rock with 32 kills between the two matches.

Match 1: Slippery Rock 3, UVa-Wise 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-16)
Slippery Rock enjoyed two six-point runs in the first set to open the match with a 25-16 win.  
In the second set, SRU broke away from a narrow 20-19 lead with a 5-1 closing run to win 25-20.

The Rock dominated the second half of the third set and pulled away from a one-point (17-16) lead by scoring eight unanswered points to take the final set 25-16.

Jones led The Rock against the Cavaliers with a 15 kills and 14 digs. Brooke Bostwick and Kaley Fucci had five blocks apiece.

Match 2: West Liberty 3, Slippery Rock 1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 29-27)
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win in the first set, but West Liberty started their comeback bid with a 25-20 win in the second set to tie it up 1-1.  

In the third set, SRU held a 9-6 lead, but West Liberty tied it up at 12-12 and never looked back as they took a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 win.  

West Liberty trailed Slippery Rock 21-15 in the fourth set, but the Hilltoppers fought back to tie it up 21-21. The hosts tied it up five more times before closing out the match with two straight points on SRU errors to win 29-27. 

Jones had a season-high 17 kills to lead The Rock against WLU, while Fucci had 13 kills and Beth Stumpf had 11.

Haley Defibaugh had 21 assists, while Zoe Rivet added 17. Courtney Oberlander recorded 30 digs to lead SRU's defense.

The Rock will travel to Alderson Broaddus on Sept. 20 for a 6 p.m. match.
