Rock downs Alderson Broaddus in straight sets

The SRU volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Alderson Broaddus University Tuesday night in Philippi, West Virginia.

PHILIPPI, W.V.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Alderson Broaddus University Tuesday night in Philippi, West Virginia.

The Rock swept the host Battlers (29-27, 25-16, 25-23) to earn its fourth three-set win this season.

The victory helps Slippery Rock improve to 7-6 overall.

Beth Stumpf tied her season-high kill total with 13, while Leah Jones recorded an 11-kill, 13-dig double-double.

Zoe Rivet and Haley Defibaugh each recorded 18 assists to lead the passing game. Rivet also had a team-high three service aces.

Kaley Fucci matched her career-high five total blocks and Courtney Oberlander had 15 digs to lead The Rock's defensive effort.

In the first set, The Rock got out to an 11-6 lead before the Battlers roared back to take a 20-19 lead. The teams tied it up eight more times, but SRU closed out the set with three unanswered points on two A-B errors and a kill from Jones to win 29-27.

The Rock went on a six-point run in the second set, thanks to two service aces by Rivet to lead the Battlers 10-6. SRU began to pull away from the hosts, as they won 25-16 to take a two-set lead.

SRU trailed Alderson Broaddus 14-6 in the third set, but went on a seven-point run to cut the deficit to just 14-13. The Rock gutted one out to take the lead at 22-20 and closed out the set with kills by Jones and Shayla Ray to win 25-23 and get the sweep.

Slippery Rock will host the University of Pitt-Johnstown Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. and Lock Haven University Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
