DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team opened its season with a convincing 23-10 victory over Shorter University (Georgia) Sunday evening at Northeast Regional Park in Florida.

The Rock (1-0) got goals from 12 different players in cruising to the comfortable victory in their first-ever meeting with the Lady Hawks (1-6).

Slippery Rock jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and then put together a seven-goal run to open up a 10-1 lead just 19:16 into the action.

Shorter scored four of the first six goals of the second half to cut the deficit to 15-8, but Slippery Rock slammed the door with another five-goal run to put the game out of reach.

The Rock finished the game advantages of 40-18 in total shots, 22-11 in draw controls and 21-13 in ground balls. SRU was a perfect 10-of-10 on clear attempts in the first half and finished the game 14-of-16 on the clear. Shorter went 12-of-16 on clear attempts.

Slippery Rock got multi-goal efforts from six different players, including three that finished with at least a hat trick.

Kaytlin Callaghan and
Erin Wilcox each tallied four goals to lead the way. Callaghan added an assist for a team-high five points, which moves her to within six points of tying for sixth on the all-time career scoring ledger at SRU. She also increased her career goal tally to 95 and is five shy of becoming the eighth player in SRU lacrosse history to hit the century mark. Wilcox's four goals bring her career tally to 92 as the senior duo look to eclipse the 100-goal mark at nearly the same time.

Jordan Chan added a hat trick in her first collegiate game and
Bre Vodde,
Erin Brown and
Jasey Sanders all tallied two goals.
Danni Wilson scored one goal and handed out two assists .

The Rock also got goals from
Caitlynn Palladino,
Anna-Marie Warrington,
Ally Culhane,
Brittany Brewer and
Tia Torchia and an assist from
Chynna Chan.

Torchia led the way in the draw circle with six draw controls. Warrington picked up a team-high four ground balls and
Rachel Ables paced the defense with two caused turnovers and one ground ball.

Jordan Wagner played the first 30 minutes in goal and earned the win after allowing four goals and recording four saves.
Taylor Balbierz played the second half and allowed six goals while making one save.

Shorter was led by Crystal Marshall with four goals and Ashley Nuqui with two goals and two assists. Catherine Mitchner made 13 saves and allowed 21 goals in 54 minutes to register the loss. Nicole Kube played the final six minutes and allowed the last two goals.

Slippery Rock will remain in Florida and play a second game at Northeast Regional Park Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Young Harris (Georgia).
