CLERMONT, Fla.- The Slippery Rock University softball team earned a two-game sweep on the final day of spring break action Friday at the National Training Center Tournament in Clermont, Florida.
Slippery Rock earned a 4-2 win against Grand Valley State University before picking up a 4-1 victory against Saint Thomas Aquinas College later in the afternoon.
The Rock went 5-7 in the tournament to improve to 9-8 overall this season. The team will be back in action on March 16 when they host No. 2 University of Indianapolis in a double header starting at 2:30 p.m.
Seniors
Katie Kaiser and
Megan Maloney led The Rock in the win against GVSU with two hits apiece. Kaiser also recorded a run and RBI. Senior
Ashley Samluk also had a home run in the win.
Freshman
Megan Brown had another impressive game in her young career against St. Thomas Aquinas with two hits and three RBI. Junior
Caitlin Baxter also had two hits and two runs.
Sophomore pitchers
Brooke Dawson and
Paige Flore both earned wins for The Rock on Friday.
Dawson struck out seven and allowed for five hits to earn the win against Grand Valley State.
Flore fanned two and allowed six hits en route to her win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Junior
Carly DeRose pitched the final inning against the Spartans and struck out one in her three batters faced.
Game One: Slippery Rock 4, Grand Valley State 2Baxter singled through the left side to start things for The Rock in the top of the second inning. Sophomore
Allie Fischer doubled to left center and Kaiser hit an RBI single up the middle to score Baxter and give The Rock a 1-0 lead.
In the next inning, Samluk homered to left field to extend SRU's lead to two runs. GVSU plated a run in the bottom of the inning and one more in the fourth to tie it up.
SRU scored two runs in the seventh inning, started by Kaiser's single to shortstop. Samluk reached base on a throwing error by GVSU's pitcher. Senior
Stacey Herzog hit an RBI single into right field to score Kaiser and Samluk scored on a wild pitch to give The Rock a two-run lead. Dawson sat the Lakers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to earn her second win of the season.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 4, Saint Thomas Aquinas 1Baxter got things rolling again in the second inning of the second game when she singled to left center. Fischer reached on an error by the catcher and sophomore
McKenzie Garland singled to third base to load the bases. Brown hit an infield RBI single to score Baxter, Maloney reached base and Fisher scored to give The Rock an early 2-0 lead.
The Rock scored two more runs in the sixth inning, started by Baxter's double to left center. Brown flied out to right field, but scored Baxter and Fisher, who got on base with a bunt.
St. Thomas Aquinas recorded a run in the bottom of the inning on three hits.
