Rock defeats Cheyney in straight sets

The SRU volleyball team earned a sweep of Cheyney Saturday morning at Alfred Cope Hall in Cheyney, Pennsylvania.

CHEYNEY, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned a sweep of Cheyney Saturday morning at Alfred Cope Hall in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. SRU dominated the first set with a 25-8 victory before taking the second and third sets 25-10, 25-19 to earn the 3-0 win over their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe.  

With the win, The Rock improves to 10-16 overall and 3-10 in conference action. Cheyney drops to 3-19 on the year and 0-13 in PSAC play.

Leah Jones had 11 kills and two service aces to lead Slippery Rock. Lamija Alisic added 10 kills, while Kelsey Boyle had five.

Zoe Rivet dished out 36 assists and had a team-high three service aces. Defensively, Courtney Oberlander recorded 24 digs and Jaden Zimmer and Mattie Taggart put up two blocks apiece.

Virshawna Campbell paced the Wolves with seven kills and an ace.

Slippery Rock jumped out to an early lead of 16-4 in the first set thanks to 10 unanswered points and outscored the Wolves 9-4 down the stretch to come away with a 25-8 win. Beth Stumpf registered two service aces in the opening frame to lead The Rock.

In the second set, SRU got out to another strong lead with nine straight points to take a 16-6 advantage. Slippery Rock had another six-point run midway through the set to help lift them to a 25-10 second-set victory.

The third set did not come as easily as the first two sets did for The Rock. After scoring the first five points of the set, Slippery Rock maintained a steady lead for the middle part of the set. The Rock had it all but won, with a 24-13 lead, but the Wolves put together a six-point run to cut it to five points. Rachel Schulz closed out the match for The Rock with a kill to win it, 25-19.

Slippery Rock will return home for the next three matches, starting with West Liberty on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the annual Dig for the Cure match.
