Rock falls to Gannon, 3-0

The Slippery Rock volleyball team took a 3-0 loss at Gannon Saturday afternoon in PSAC Northwest action.

ERIE, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. The Golden Knights (20-3, 9-2 PSAC) earned a 25-14 victory in the first set before completing the sweep with wins of 25-19, 25-18 in the second and third sets.

The Rock (9-15, 2-9) was led by eight kills from Leah Jones. Shayla Ray and Brooke Bostwick also recorded six kills apiece in the loss.

Zoe Rivet's 16 assists led the passing game, while Haley Defibaugh also recorded 14 assists. Defensively, Lamija Alisic registered two blocks and Courtney Oberlander had 14 digs to round out The Rock's top performers.

Slippery Rock held a 10-9 lead in the opening set, but Gannon scored six straight points to take a lead they would hold for the rest of the set. The hosts scored 10 of the set final 14 points to earn the 25-14 victory.

The teams kept it close for the beginning of the second set until Gannon broke a 10-10 tie with three unanswered points to take a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the frame, as they went on to win 25-19.

In the third set, Slippery Rock trailed Gannon 7-6 before scoring four straight points to take a 10-7 lead thanks in part to kills from Bostwick, Jones and Kaley Fucci. The Golden Knights went on a 6-1 run to steal back the lead at 13-11. The hosts outscored The Rock 12-7 down the stretch and closed out the set with four unanswered points to earn a 25-19 win.

Slippery Rock will head east next weekend to take on West Chester (Oct. 28 – 7 p.m.) and Cheyney (Oct. 29 – 11 a.m.).
