ERIE, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Northwestern Division action Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Slippery Rock managed a 25-22 win in the first set before taking the second and third sets 27-25, 25-22 to earn the sweep over the Lakers.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 9-14 overall and 2-8 in conference action. Mercyhurst falls to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in the PSAC.
The Rock was led by
Leah Jones with 13 kills and three service aces.
Lamija Alisic added eight kills.
Mattie Taggart recorded four blocks, while
Kaley Fucci chipped in four kills and three blocks.
Zoe Rivet registered a double-double on 15 assists and 10 digs.
Courtney Oberlander had 22 digs and
Haley Defibaugh added another 13 digs to round out The Rock's top performers.
Slippery Rock got out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set thanks in part to two kills and two aces by Jones. Mercyhurst rallied back to cut their deficit to two points, 17-15. SRU stretched their lead back to five points, 20-15, but once again Mercyhurst fought back to cut it to just one point, 23-22. Jones and Rivet closed out the set with back-to-back kills to win it for The Rock, 25-22.
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set before SRU fought back with five unanswered points to steal the lead from the hosts. The rest of the set went back and forth, with each team taking their turn in sharing a slight lead. The Rock held a 23-20 lead near the end of the set, but the Lakers put together three straight points to tie it up, 23-23. The teams tied it up again at 24 and 25, but Slippery Rock closed out the frame with two straight points on a kill from Alisic and an ace from Rivet to win, 27-25.
In a back and forth third set, Slippery Rock held a narrow 13-12 lead midway through until Mercyhurst went on a four-point run to take a 16-13 lead. The Lakers held a three-point lead, 18-15, but Slippery Rock scored seven straight points thanks in part to three kills from Jones to take a four-point lead, 22-18. The Rock had the set all but put away at 24-19, but the Lakers recorded three straight kills to cut it to 24-22. Jones closed out the set with a kill to earn the sweep with a 25-22 win.
Slippery Rock will continue PSAC Northwest action Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gannon. Â
