Millersville downs Rock in three sets

The SRU volleyball team finished its weekend road trip with a 3-0 loss to Millersville Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team finished its weekend road  trip with a 3-0 loss to Millersville University Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Millersville won a close first set 25-23 before completing the sweep of The Rock with wins of 25-16 and 25-20 in the second and third.

With the loss, SRU falls to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. Millersville improves to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Leah Jones led SRU in the loss with eight kills, 10 digs, two blocks and a service ace. Brooke Bostwick (6) and Shayla Ray (5) rounded out SRU's kill leaders.

Haley Defibaugh and Hanna Lombardo evenly split 24 assists to lead SRU's passing game.

Courtney Oberlander recorded a team-high 25 digs, while Kristen C. Smith had another 10 digs. Additionally, Oberlander and Lombardo recorded a service ace.

Mattie Taggart registered three total blocks to wrap up SRU's top performers against the Marauders.

SRU jetted out to an 8-2 lead in the first set, but Millersville recorded two four-point runs to steal the lead at 17-16. The teams battled it out for the rest of the set, but Millersville closed out the opening frame on a 4-1 run to come away with the 25-23 victory.

After getting out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, SRU struggled to keep the momentum going as Millersville outscored them 11-5 to force SRU to take its first timeout of the set. The hosts then went on another commanding run, a 7-3 advantage that called for another Rock timeout at 18-12. The Marauders closed out the second set with a 7-4 run to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 win.

The hosts held a strong 12-5 lead in the third set, but SRU did not go away quietly as The Rock scored seven straight points to tie it up at 12. The teams tied it up five more times, but Millersville broke a 20-20 tie with five unanswered points down the stretch to complete the sweep, 25-20.

Slippery Rock will be back in action Friday, Oct. 7 at Seton Hill University. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
