Box Score (HTML)WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped both matches on the second day of competition at the Atlantic Region Crossover Saturday in West Virginia.
Slippery Rock opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Fairmont State before being narrowly defeated in five sets by West Liberty, 3-2.
With the two losses, Slippery Rock drops to 7-5 overall.
Fairmont State jumped The Rock in the first set and cruised to a 25-19 victory. The Falcons picked up where they left off in the second set and notched a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 over Slippery Rock. FSU got out to a 14-7 lead in the third set, but SRU did not go away quietly, as they outscored the Falcons 8-2 to bring cut it to one, 16-15. FSU answered with four straight points to lead to a 25-19 win.
In the opener, freshman
Beth Stumpf recorded 12 kills to lead The Rock. Sophomore
Haley Defibaugh dished out a team-high 31 assists, while also recording 17 digs. Sophomore
Courtney Oberlander led the team in digs with 23.
The Falcons finished with advantages in kills (47-32), attack percentage (.264-.090), service aces (3-2) and digs (66-62).
In the second game of Day 2, a seven-point run midway through the first set against West Liberty helped lead The Rock to a 25-18 win. SRU held a slight lead for half of the second set, but WLU tied it up four times before pulling away from SRU thanks to two 3-point runs that led to a close 25-22 win. The third set went back and forth with 10 ties and four lead changes, but West Liberty came out on top 25-23. The Rock responded with a 25-16 fourth set win to tie it up 2-2 heading into the final set. SRU led 9-6 in the fifth frame before West Liberty scored six straight points to take a lead that led to a 15-13 win for the Hilltoppers.
Sophomore
Lamija Alisic recorded a double-double with a team-high 19 kills and 15 digs against West Liberty. Stumpf had a double-double of her own with 15 kills and 19 digs. Defibaugh led the passing game with 51 assists and 16 digs, while Oberlander had another double-digit dig performance with 22.
Despite the loss, Slippery Rock finished with advantages in kills (64-60) and service aces (8-3). WLU was on the high side of digs (100-91) and total blocks (10-8).
Slippery Rock returns to action on Tuesday in the home-opener at 6 p.m. at Morrow Field House.
