Rock falters on first day of action in West Virginia

The Slippery Rock volleyball team dropped both matches on the opening day of competition at the Atlantic Region Crossover.

WHEELING, W.Va.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped both matches on Day One of the Atlantic Region Volleyball Crossover in West Virginia Friday night.
 
The Rock opened the day with a 3-0 loss (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) to No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit before dropping a close one to Shepherd College, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 30-28), later in the evening at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on the campus of WJU.
 
Slippery Rock's record goes to 7-3 overall after the first day of competition. The team takes on Fairmont State (1:30 p.m.) and West Liberty (6:30 p.m.) Saturday at West Liberty University's Academic Sports and Recreation Complex. A live stream is available at the links above.
 
Junior Leah Jones led Slippery Rock against WJU with 13 kills. Sophomore Lamija Alisic added nine kills and two service aces. Sophomore Haley Defibaugh had 32 assists and classmate Courtney Oberlander had 17 digs in the loss.

Wheeling Jesuit finished the match with advantages in kills (49-35), attack percentage (.317-.103), digs (59-52) and total blocks (7.5-2), however The Rock edged the Cardinals in service aces (3-1). 

Against Shepherd, Jones had a team-high 14 kills, while Alisic and junior Jaden Zimmer added 11 and 10 kills each. Sophomore Hanna Lombardo had a team-high four service aces, while Defibaugh recorded 32 assists. 

The Rams held advantages in kills (43-39), attack percentage (.203-.062) and total blocks (7-3) against The Rock, but SRU enjoyed advantages in service aces for the second straight match (6-3) and was on the higher side of digs (76-69).
