Rock streak continues with 16-15 win at MU

Slippery Rock continued its winning streak and moved one game closer to a playoff position with a 16-15 victory at Millersville Friday in PSAC action.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team used a 6-0 run midway through the second half to separate itself from hosting Millersville University and come away with a 16-15 win Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
 
The victory is the third in a row for SRU and evens The Rock at 7-7 overall on the season and improves the team to above .500 in the PSAC at 5-4. It also keeps the playoff hopes alive for Slippery Rock with three games remaining in the conference schedule. Millersville saw its record fall to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in PSAC action.
 
Slippery Rock remains in seventh place in the PSAC standings, one spot back of the final playoff position, but gained a game in the standings Friday. The Rock got some help when East Stroudsburg upset Bloomsburg, bringing the Huskies back one game closer to SRU at 6-3 in PSAC action.
 
Neither team could gain an edge in the opening half as they played to a 7-7 tie at the break. Millersville put together a 3-0 run to take an early 5-3 lead, but Slippery Rock responded with its own 3-0 run to swing the momentum back away from the Marauders before the teams traded goals to end the opening period.
 
The hosts scored the first two goals of the second half and opened the period on a 3-1 run to take a 10-8 lead with 21:47 to play.
 
Slippery Rock responded with a goal less than 20 seconds later that sparked a 6-0 run that was capped by a goal from Kaytlin Callaghan with 14:30 to play that gave The Rock a 14-10 lead.
 
The four-goal margin remained until SRU was up 16-12 with 6:50 play before Millersville rallied back with three quick goals to cut the deficit to one, 16-15 with 3:30 to play. Slippery Rock shut the door from there and never allowed the tying goal.
 
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 44-29 in total shots, 22-11 in draw controls and 26-20 in ground balls. Slippery Rock was 13-of-15 in clear attempts with just two failed efforts, while Millersville had seven failed attempts to finish 15-of-22.
 
Paige Costantino led the way with six points on five goals and one assist. She moved into third all-time at Slippery Rock in total scoring and now has 161 points in her career. Her 118 goals rank fourth all-time in program history and she is now one assist shy of moving into third on the all-time ledger.
 
Erin Wilcox netted four goals and pulled down 10 draw controls. She is now 18 goals shy of reaching the 100-goal milestone. Kaytlin Callaghan added two goals and two assists to bring her 20 assists on the season, which is just three away from tying the SRU single-season record. She is also now just one point shy of moving into seventh on the all-time scoring list. Jasey Sanders also scored two goals and handed out two assists.
 
The Rock also got one goal each from Lydia Heishman, Chynna Chan and Caitlynn Palladino and one assist from Ally Culhane to cap the scoring.
 
Sarah Morris recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls and is now nine ground balls shy of tying the all-time program record. She is also one caused turnover away from moving into a tie for fourth all-time.
 
Jordan Wagner improved to 7-7 on the season after recording eight saves in goal.
 
Millersville was led by Sabrina Fusco with three goals and three assists. Renee Landis and Bridget Hufnagel each added two goals and one assist.
 
Shannon Davis took the loss in goal after recording 11 saves.
 
Slippery Rock will look to continue its winning streak Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Kutztown.
