Game VideoSLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight double overtime game against a nationally ranked opponent with a 13-12 defeat to No. 16 West Chester Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
The Rock entered Friday's game coming off a 14-13 double overtime loss to No. 18 Seton Hill Tuesday night in a game that featured a seven-goal rally by Slippery Rock in the second half.
Â
Friday's game was very similar in that West Chester (4-2, 2-1 PSAC) built a 10-4 lead just 32 seconds into the second half and forced The Rock (2-5, 0-2 PSAC) to rally again. The hosts put together a 5-0 run with four goals from
Kaytlin Callaghan and one from
Paige Costantino to cut it to 10-9 with 20:18 to play.
Â
West Chester scored the next two goals to regain a 12-9 lead, but The Rock closed regulation on a 3-0 run with goals from Callaghan,
Erin Wilcox and
Chynna Chan to even the score at 12-12.
Â
Slippery Rock had a chance to win it in regulation with a free position attempt with 10 seconds left, but the shot missed high over the crossbar.
Â
Neither team could score in the first six minute overtime session. West Chester managed two shots on goal, but both were stopped by Rock keeper
Jordan Wagner. Slippery Rock managed one shot on target that was saved by Golden Ram keeper Merrilee Viguers.
Â
Slippery Rock won the draw control to open the second overtime session, but could not get a shot off as West Chester forced a turnover to gain possession. The Golden Rams earned back-to-back free position attempts, the first of which was whistled dead and the second of which was saved, but a ground ball on the missed shot kept possession and Sarah Dennison notched the game-winner with 3:49 to play in the period.
Â
Dennison was only in the game because starter Dina Cifelli received her second yellow card with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation and was forced to sit the rest of the game.
Â
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 33-23 in total shots, 23-19 in shots on goal, 17-12 in draw controls and 24-23 in ground balls. The problem for SRU was in the turnover battle, where the hosts turned the ball over 22 times, including 10 that were uncaused. The Rock were just 10-of-20 in clear attempts in the game, while West Chester was 10-of-14.
Â
Callaghan led the team with five goals and Costantino added four goals. Wilcox chipped in two goals, Chan scored one goal and
Caitlynn Palladino added one assist to cap the scorers for SRU.
Â
Wagner finished the game with six saves and a team-high four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Â
West Chester was paced by Ashley Pyle with four goals and three assists. Hannah Cowan added three goals and one assist and Cifelli added three assists before she was disqualified.
Â
Viguers made 11 saves in the win to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Â
Slippery Rock will have little time to recover from the back-to-back heartbreakers, as Shippensburg visits Saturday for a 3 p.m. PSAC match.
