Rock falls at #18 Mount Olive, 16-9

Slippery Rock got off to a slow start and dropped a 16-9 decision at No. 18 Mount Olive Wednesday night.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team outscored No. 18 Mount Olive 6-5 over the final 25 minutes, but couldn't recover from a slow start in dropping a 16-9 decision on the road Wednesday night in non-conference action.
 
Slippery Rock drops to 1-1 overall on the season, while Mount Olive improves to 8-2 overall as the two teams were at drastically different points in their seasons coming into the game.
 
Mount Olive scored the first seven goals of the game over the opening 26 minutes and held an 8-3 lead at halftime. Slippery Rock rallied with two three goal runs in the second half, but couldn't close down the gap created during the opening run from the Trojans.
 
Slippery Rock got hat tricks from Lydia Heishman and Kaytlin Callaghan with three goals each to lead the offensive effort. Chynna Chan, Erin Wilcox and Caitlynn Palladino each added one goal and Paige Costantino and Jasey Sanders each chipped in one assist.
 
Jordan Wagner played the full 60 minutes in goal for Slippery Rock and recorded six saves in the loss.
 
Mount Olive posted advantages of 26-19 in total shots and 22-19 in shots on goal. Both teams were even in draw controls that were recorded with seven each and The Rock posted a 13-10 edge in ground balls. Both teams were credited with 100 percent efforts on clear attempts with SRU at 6-for-6 and Mount Olive at 5-for-5.
 
The Trojans were led by three goals and two assists from Claire Wigler and three goals and one assist from Candace Corkin. Hannah Knight made 10 saves in the win.
 
Slippery Rock will continue its spring break road trip with a noon first draw at Shepherd Saturday in non-conference action before opening the home portion of the schedule March 17 at 5 p.m. against Lake Erie.
