CALIFORNIA, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team won a close first set, but lost the next three as they fell to California (Pa.) 3-1 Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action.
SRU trailed California 24-19 in the first set, but The Rock put together a strong 8-1 run to earn a 27-25 comeback win to take a 1-0 lead.
California responded to the loss with a commanding 25-10 win in the second set to tie the match up 1-1.
In the third set, the Vulcans took a 13-7 lead before The Rock went on a six-point run to tie it up at 13-13. California held off another Rock comeback and cruised to a 25-20 win to take the match lead 2-1.
The hosts broke a tie at 8-8 in the fourth set and overpowered The Rock for the remainder of the set as they went on to get a 25-14 victory.
Beth Stumpf led The Rock in the loss with 12 kills and 16 digs.
Leah Jones added nine kills and another 16 digs.
Haley Defibaugh recorded 17 assists and 17 digs, while
Hanna Lombardo added 11 assists to her team's effort.
Courtney Oberlander anchored the backcourt with a team-high 29 digs.
The Vulcans held advantages in kills (49-32), service aces (6-3) and total blocks (8-3). California and Slippery Rock played evenly in digs with 100 apiece.
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 10-24 overall and 3-18 in the PSAC. California improves to 15-16 overall and 13-8 in conference action.
SRU concludes its season Saturday at Seton Hill at 1 p.m.Â
