Pcholinsky’s goal gives Rock overtime win at Gannon

Mike Pcholinsky scored a goal with under five minutes remaining in double overtime to lift Slippery Rock to a 1-0 victory at Gannon Wednesday night.

ERIE, Pa. - Junior midfielder Mike Pcholinsky scored a goal with under five minutes remaining in double overtime to lift the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Gannon University Wednesday night.

The win improves The Rock's record to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Slippery Rock is now 2-1 in overtime games in 2015. Gannon drops to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in league play.

With the game seemingly headed towards a 0-0 draw, Pcholinsky corralled a shot from senior forward Peter Boylan, which was deflected by Gannon goalkeeper Jorge Hernandez, and proceeded to beat Hernandez to give SRU the 1-0 victory.

Pcholinsky's goal was his first of the season and second of his collegiate career. In 10 games this season, Pcholinsky now has one goal and one assist for three points, the sixth most of any Rock player. Boylan's assist was his team-high third of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Hoffer made his first start since Sept. 23 and responded by stopping three shots for the shutout-victory. Hoffer is 4-2 on the season with a 0.92 goals against average and two shutouts.

For the game, Slippery Rock held a 13-8 advantage over Gannon in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Pcholinsky, Boylan, junior defender Patrick Sullivan and senior forward Mike Ilodigwe tallied two shots each on the night.

Slippery Rock started the game by firing off three shots in the opening four minutes and continued as the aggressors through the remainder of the half. SRU finished the opening 45 minutes of play with a 6-1 edge in shots. However, none of the attempts were able to get by Hernandez and the game remained tied at 0-0 heading into the second half.

Gannon regrouped in the second half and produced three shots on goal in the first 18 minutes of the period, but Hoffer stopped all the attempts to keep the game scoreless. Both teams recorded two shots in the final 19 minutes, but none of the tries were on target and the game headed into overtime.

Following a scoreless opening overtime period, Slippery Rock registered three shots in the second overtime, the third being Pcholinsky's game-winner at 115:37.

Hernandez stopped six shots for Gannon in the loss.

Slippery Rock continues its three-match road swing 3:30 p.m. Saturday at East Stroudsburg.
