California beats Rock in three sets

The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost to Clarion 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the final home game of the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team was swept 3-0 by California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action in the home finale at Morrow Field House.
 
Prior to the game, seniors Megan Bush, Anna Mease, and Kristen Smith were honored in the final home match of their Slippery Rock careers.
 
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 10-18 overall and 3-12 in the PSAC. California goes to 9-16 and 7-8 in conference action.
 
In the opening set, the Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Slippery Rock cut it to three at 18-15 with five straight points, including two service aces by Kristen C. Smith. The hosts would get no closer though, as California outlasted The Rock 25-20 to take a 1-0 match advantage.
 
The teams battled back-and-forth in the second set until California scored six straight points to lead 21-14. The Crimson Hawks held off The Rock for the remainder of the set to earn a 25-18 win.
 
In the third set, California got out to a 13-7 lead before Slippery Rock scored five straight points to cut it to 13-12. The teams played close for the rest of the set, but the Vulcans held on to record a 25-20 victory.
 
Leah Jones led the team with 15 kills and nine digs. Beth Stumpf added eight kills and Courtney Oberlander led the defense with 15 digs.
 
Hanna Lombardo and Haley Defibaugh led The Rock's passing with 17 and 12 assists, respectfully.
 
California held advantages over Slippery Rock in kills (45-34), digs (44-38), service aces (8-4) and total blocks (5-4).
 
Slippery Rock will play the remaining seven matches on the road, starting at Clarion Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
