Rock fights off Edinboro, 69-65

Frank Holloway scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Slippery Rock to a 69-65 win over Edinboro in PSAC action Wednesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team fought off a tough shooting night and a resilient Edinboro squad to earn a 69-65 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.
 
The Rock improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league games with the win, while Edinboro dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in PSAC action.
 
Slippery Rock shot just 32.4 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, but pulled down 56 rebounds for a +15 advantage on the glass and held Edinboro to just 38.1 percent shooting.
 
The Rock led for the entire second half and continually fought off short rallies from the Fighting Scots before knocking down enough free throws in the final two minutes to hold on for the win.
 
Frank Holloway was the only Slippery Rock player to reach double figure points Wednesday, leading the team with 19 points and eight rebounds.
 
Kelvin Goodwin added nine points and six rebounds. Cornelius Brown added nine rebounds to his eight-point effort, Malcolm Richardson chipped in seven rebounds to go along with his eight points, Antonio Butler grabbed six rebounds and scored eight points and Chaquille Pratt scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.
 
Jamal Gatali capped the top performers with six points and a team-high three blocks.
 
Slippery Rock made 22-of-68 shots from the field for the 32.4 percent efficiency, which included a 2-for-12 effort from 3-point. The Rock could have run away with the game with a better night at the free throw line, but made just 23-of-36 attempts for a 63.9 percent mark.
 
Fortunately, Edinboro was just as bad at the free throw line. The Scots also missed 13 attempts and finished just 9-of-19 for a 47.4 percent efficiency at the charity stripe. Edinboro connected on 24-of-63 shots from the field for the 38.1 percent mark and stayed in the game by hitting 8-of-19 3-point tries (42.1 percent).
 
Henri Wade-Chatman scored a game-high 25 points to lead the visitors. Jaymon Mason added 12 points and no other player scored more than six points.
 
Slippery Rock scored 22 second chance points after recording 26 offensive rebounds. Edinboro scored just seven second chance points on 14 offensive boards.
 
The Rock will remain home for their next three games, beginning Friday night when Ohio University Eastern visits Morrow Field House for a 7 p.m. non-conference game. Slippery Rock will then break for finals week and returns to action with a 7:30 p.m. tip Dec. 16 against Millersville and another 7:30 p.m. tip Dec. 17 against Shippensburg.
