SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University and Seton Hill University split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader between nationally-ranked NCAA Division II baseball teams at Jack Critchfield Park.
The 30th-ranked Rock won Game 1 by a 6-3 score behind a 3-for-4 effort at the plate by junior utilityman
Kevin Jovanovich (right photo) and complete-game pitching effort by junior right-hander
Lou Trivino.
Seton Hill, the No. 25 team in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll, exploded for seven runs in the top of the second inning and got a route-going pitching effort from Brett Sullivan en route to an 8-3 win in Game 2.
The split gave SRU a 20-9 record, while Seton Hill stood 24-7 at the end of the day.
The teams close out their three-game weekend and season series with a 1 p.m. single game Sunday on the Griffins' home field in Greensburg.
The Seton Hill Sports Information Office will provide
live statistical updates and a
live audio broadcast of the game, weather permitting.
Seton Hill parlayed a leadoff double down the left-field line by Brendan Costantino into a run in the top of the first inning in Game 1, only to see The Rock respond with five unanswered tallies.
Junior shortstop
Will Kengor opened The Rock half of the first inning with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch by Seton Hill starting and losing pitcher Alex Haines and scored on the first of Jovanovich's three hits to tie the score at 1-1.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth, when The Rock scored two runs. Jovanovich got the rally started with a leadoff double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by junior right fielder
Brandon Myers.
Myers moved around the bases on a pair of walks, capped by an RBI base on balls by Kengor, and a Seton Hill fielding error to extend The Rock lead to 3-1 at the end of four innings.
Jovanovich slapped a no-out single as part of a two-run Rock uprising in the bottom of the fifth that featured RBI singles by junior catcher
Ryan LaRose and sophomore third baseman
Jordan Faretta.
Seton Hill got two runs back as a result of three hits in the top of the sixth to trim The Rock lead to 5-3 before SRU senior
Austin Benshadle slapped a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to set the final score.
Both teams collected eight hits in Game 1, which lived up to its billing as a pitching duel between Trivino and Haines, who are high on professional scouts' list of prospects to watch.
Trivino allowed three earned runs, struck out seven and walked one in the process of recording his fourth seven-inning complete game of the season and improving his season record to 5-2.
Haines allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits, struck out four and walked four in four and two-thirds innings and suffered his first loss in five decisions this spring.
Jovanovich was the only Rock player to have more than one hit, while Pat McCarthy had two hits to lead Seton Hill's attack.
Game 2 started out as a pitching duel between The Rock's
Garret Peterson and Sullivan as both hurlers threw blanks in the opening inning of action.
Seton Hill then erupted for seven runs on six hits in the top of the second inning, all but one of the hits coming off Peterson, who struck out two and walked two in one and one-third innings and was tagged with his first loss in four decisions this spring.
Rock relief pitcher
Jon Anderson pretty much shut the Griffins down after he entered the game in the second inning. Anderson allowed one earned run on four hits, struck out one and walked one in the final five and two-third innings.
The Rock offense had a chance to make things interesting in the bottom of the third, when the hosts loaded the bases with no outs, but managed to score only one run in that situation. Junior left fielder
Graeme Zaparzynski's RBI single to left pushed across the first Rock run.
Seton Hill answered The Rock run with one of its own in the top of the sixth, thanks to an RBI double by McCarthy, to take an 8-1 lead.
Down to its final three outs in the bottom of the seventh, The Rock scored two runs to set the final score. Kengor plated one run with a sacrifice fly before Zaparzynski slapped his second RBI single of the game to finish the scoring.
Zaparzynski and senior second baseman
Matt Curtis had two hits each to lead a seven-hit Rock attack in Game 2. Three Seton Hill players had a pair of hits each as part of the Griffins' nine-hit attack.
Sunday's game at Seton Hill will be the first of five consecutive road games The Rock will play before returning home next Saturday to entertain defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division champion Mercyhurst in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Critchfield Park.
The Rock travel to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday and are at Mercyhurst for a 1 p.m. twinbill Friday.
