WASHINGTON, Pa. – Hosting California U. of Pa. scored 22 runs  Saturday afternoon en route to a doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division baseball action at Consol Energy Park.

The Vulcans (31-14 overall, 13-7 PSAC-W) overcame a 4-0 lead to record a 10-6 win in the opening game and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 12-3 win in Game 2.

The losses snapped a five-game win streak for SRU, which saw its season records fall to 29-17 overall, 11-9 in PSAC-West action.

The sweep moved California into a tie with Gannon (21-15, 13-7 PSAC-W) for first place in the division standings, while the losses dropped SRU, which began the day tied with California for second place, into a tie with Indiana, Pa. (25-20, 11-9 PSAC-W) for fourth place.

Mercyhurst (30-16, 15-9 PSAC-W) swept a doubleheader from Gannon Saturday to take over third place in the division standings and assure itself one of the four PSAC tournament berths that will be awarded to a PSAC-West team.

The Rock control their own destiny in terms of securing one of the remaining PSAC-West berths. The Green and White meet Gannon in a four-game series next weekend to close out the regular-season schedule.

The Rock-Golden Knights series starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday in Erie and winds up with a 4 p.m. Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day doubleheader next Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock.

Saturday's action vs. California started off good for The Rock, who scored runs in each of their first three at bats in Game 1 to take a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings.

Junior shortstop Will Kengor and junior right fielder Graeme Zaparzynski opened the game with back-to-back singles. Kengor moved to third on a double-play groundout and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.

The Rock's second run came as a result of a two-out double down the right field line by junior designated hitter Brandon Myers and an RBI single up the middle by sophomore third baseman Jake Nogalo in the second inning.

California, after being retired in order in the bottom of the first inning, had a runner on second base with one out in the second but Rock starting pitcher Kyle Schneider induced a ground ball and a fly out to end the threat.

The Rock offense rewarded Schneider for his effort by scoring two runs in the top of the third to push their advantage to 4-0. Key hits in the rally were a leadoff single by Kengor and an RBI single by senior first baseman John Shaffer. The second run of the inning came home on a throwing error.

California responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to trim The Rock lead to 4-3. Schneider escaped further damage by inducing an inning-ending popout with the bases loaded.

The Vulcans came right back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kyle Petty, to take a 9-4 lead.

The Rock got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a double by Shaffer, an RBI ground out by junior catcher Kevin Jovanovich and an RBI triple by junior center fielder Jake Weibley.

California answered The Rock runs with a single tally of their own in the bottom of the sixth to set the final margin at 10-6.

The hosts collected 14 hits off two Rock pitchers, while Kengor and Shaffer were both 2-for-4 to lead a 10-hit Rock attack. Junior designated hitter Brandon Myers had a double as part of SRU's offensive effort.

Kengor, the top hitter in the PSAC with a .453 average, was also 2-for-4 in the second game, in which SRU had seven hits. His two-out double in the top of the seventh was The Rock's only extra-base hit.

Schneider (5-4) was tagged with the Game 1 loss after he allowed nine earned runs on 12 hits, struck out one and walked two in the first three and two-thirds innings.

Junior right-hander Anthony Naso yielded one earned run on two hits and walked one in the final two and one-third innings.

SRU also took the early lead in Game 2 as Weibley singled with two outs in the top of the second inning, stole second and scored on an RBI single by junior catcher Ryan LaRose to give SRU a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, though, as California tied the score at 1-1 with a solo home run by A.J. Robinson and added two more tallies in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

SRU evened the count at 3-3 with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning, the key hit being a two-run single by Nogalo.

California broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored seven runs on five hits and one Rock error to take a 10-3 lead. The hosts added the final two tallies in the fifth.

Redshirt freshman right-hander Jon Anderson was tagged with his first loss in five decisions this spring after he allowed seven runs, five of which were earned, on five hits, struck out two and walked one in the first three-plus innings.

Sophomore right-hander Mike Dunn relieved Anderson and allowed three earned runs on five hits and walked one in one-plus inning of work.

Junior right-hander Zac Anderson (no relation) allowed two runs on three hits in the final two innings.
