INDIANA, Pa. – Junior second baseman
Graeme Zaparzynski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs Saturday afternoon to lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 6-5 win over hosting Indiana U. of Pa. in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division baseball doubleheader.
IUP scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to hand The Rock a 1-0 setback in Saturday's first game.
The split gave SRU a 25-15 overall record and a 7-7 mark in PSAC-West action heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. home doubleheader vs. IUP (21-14, 7-7).
Zaparzynski, who had one of the two RBI doubles in a two-run, top of the sixth-inning rally that ultimately provided the winning margin, was one of two Rock players to collect a pair of hits in Saturday's second game. Junior catcher
Kevin Jovanovich was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles as part of a six-hit winning attack.
Senior first baseman
John Shaffer's RBI double in The Rock sixth plated what proved to be the winning run. Sophomore third baseman
Jordan Faretta also had an RBI double and finished the game with two RBIs.
SRU scored a pair of runs in both the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead, only to see IUP score four times in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4.
Faretta's RBI double plated the first Rock run before an RBI single by Zaparzynski made it 2-0 in the top of the third.
Faretta picked up his second RBI of the game with a bases-loaded ground out in the fourth inning. Junior shortstop
Will Kengor followed with a sacrifice fly to give The Rock their 4-0 lead.
IUP manufactured its four fifth-inning tallies from only one hit, a hit batsman, a Rock error and two wild pitches.
Kengor got The Rock's sixth-inning rally started with a two-out walk and scored on Zaparzynski's double to center field to put The Rock back on top by a 5-4 score before Zaparzynski streaked home on Shaffer's double to right field to make it a 6-4 game.
IUP got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff triple by Brett Quiggle and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Uhl, but that proved to be the final run of the game.
Junior right-hander
John Kovalik, the third and final pitcher used by Rock head coach
Jeff Messer, picked up the win. Kovalik allowed one earned run on three hits in the final two and one-third innings to improve his season record to 3-2.
Sophomore right-hander
Garret Peterson yielded three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits, struck out four, walked one and hit two batters in the first four and one-third innings.
Junior right-hander
Anthony Naso walked the only batter he faced before Kovalik came on in the bottom of the fifth.
Rock ace
Lou Trivino, also a junior right-hander, was the hard-luck losing pitcher in Game 1. Trivino saw his season record drop to 5-4 with his second consecutive 1-0 loss. He scattered five hits, struck out five, walked one and hit one batter in six innings of work.
IUP ace Stephen Cooke was the Game 1 winner. He allowed three hits, struck out five and walked three en route to his seventh win in eight decisions this spring.
