Most importantly, the Green and White moved into Friday's 5:30 p.m. semifinal game, in which they will take on defending conference champion East Stroudsburg University, at Indiana U. of Pa.
The final-four berth is the first earned by The Rock since their conference runner-up finish in 2010-11 and keeps alive SRU's bid for a second trip to the NCAA Division II regional tournament in the last three seasons.
Gannon, which received votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' national poll released Tuesday, saw its season record fall to 22-7 and, most likely, also watched the curtain ring down on its 2012-13 season.
Junior swingman
Tabari Perry scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead The Rock's winning effort Tuesday night.
Senior forward
Devin Taylor recorded his team-best 12th “double-double” of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds and senior forward
Gerald Brooks added 10 points and eight rebounds to complement Perry's performance.
Earlier in the day, Taylor was named to first-team All-PSAC-West honors for the second consecutive season, while Brooks was afforded second-team all-conference honors.
It's worth noting, Brooks made three of four free throws and Perry added a 2-for-2 showing at the line in the decisive final run.
In the end, though, the most-important, eventual game-winning points came on a 3-point jump shot by senior guard
Darious Clark that gave SRU a 59-58 lead with 30 seconds left in the overtime period.
Ironically, those were the only points Clark scored in the game. He entered the game with a 13.6 points per game average, the second-best mark on the team.
Senior center
Luiz Santos contributed nine points and seven rebounds to Tuesday's winning effort, while senior guard
Aubin Reeves handed out a game-high six assists.
First-team All-PSAC-West performer Darrell Blanton led Gannon's attack with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Robert Wilson added 13 points and seven rebounds.
SRU finished the game with a 43% (20 of 4&) efficiency on its field-goal attempts with a 4-of-10 showing from 3-point range. The Rock made 18 of 26 (69%) free throws.
Gannon, which burned the nets at a 60% rate last Wednesday in an 85-71 win over The Rock, shot 30% (21 of 70) from the field Tuesday. The Golden Knights made 4 of 20 shots from 3-point range and sank 12 of 17 (71%) free throws.
SRU committed 20 turnovers, which Gannon converted into 20 points, while the hosts made 13 mistakes, which SRU turned into 13 points.
The top two rebounding teams in the conference (SRU No. 1, Gannon No. 2), The Rock and Golden Knights battled to a 41-41 deadlock on the backboards Tuesday night.
Tuesday's battle was what you would expect when teams that tied for second place in the final division standings meet head-on. The score was tied on nine occasions and the lead changed hands seven times during the 45 minutes of action.
The Rock scored nine of the final 14 points in the first half of action to take a 27-24 lead into the intermission.
Gannon shot an icy 28% (8-29) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, were 2-of-10 from 3-point range and made six of 10 free throws.
The Rock, meanwhile, made a respectable 41% (11 of 27) of their action shots, one of five attempts from long range and canned four of six free throws.
Each team grabbed 20 rebounds in the opening stanza. The Rock had nine turnovers compared to seven for Gannon.
Perry had eight first-half points to lead The Rock effort, while Blanton scored nine of Gannon's points.
The score was tied on three occasions in the early going, capped by a 7-7 stalemate with 15:45 remaining. The Rock then scored seven unanswered points to take a 14-7 lead at the 11-minute mark, only to see Gannon respond with an 11-0 run to take an 18-14 lead with six minutes left.
Undaunted, The Rock came right back and closed out the half with a 13-6 run for the three-point halftime advantage.
The Rock held onto the lead for the first three minutes of the second stanza before Gannon took a 34-32 lead. Two lead changes and two ties later, the teams were knotted at 38-38 with 12:30 left to play in regulation time.
A 10-1 Gannon run in the next two minutes gave the hosts a 48-39 lead with 9:15 left and The Rock needed all but eight seconds of the remaining time to erase that deficit.
Taylor banked home a short jumper from the left side of the key with 0:08 on the game clock to knot the score at 50-50 and send the game into overtime.
Gannon scored eight of the first 12 points in overtime to hold a 58-54 advantage with 2:45 left in the overtime period to set the stage for The Rock's game-winning run.
