SLIPPERY ROCK , Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team got solid pitching and timely hitting Saturday afternoon to take care of business and sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader from visiting Clarion University at Jack Critchfield Park.
Sophomore southpaw
Anton Constantino pitched a two-hit complete game to lead SRU to a 5-1 win in Saturday's first game before freshman right-hander
Jon Anderson threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout to help propel The Rock to a 5-0 win in the second game.
With the sweep, The Rock won the season series with Clarion three games to one and improved their season records to 18-7 overall, 5-3 in PSAC-West competition.
The Rock ended the day alone in third place in the PSAC-West standings, one game behind division-leading Gannon (12-8, 6-2 PSAC-W) and percentage points behind second-place California, Pa. (16-6, 3-1 PSAC-W).
Clarion saw its season records fall to 1-17 overall, 1-7 in division play.
Constantino, who recorded a win vs. Division I Dartmouth College in his previous start (March 20), allowed one earned run, struck out five and walked two Saturday en route to his first route-going effort of the season and evened his record at 2-2.
Anderson struck out four and did not issue a base on balls in his second start of the season, his first complete-game effort, and recorded his second win in as many decisions this spring.
Offensively, junior utilityman
Kevin Jovanovich (above photo) was 3-for-3 with a double and junior shortstop
Will Kengor was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and one RBI to pace a 12-hit Rock attack in Saturday's first game.
Sophomore designated hitter
Jordan Faretta (RBI) and junior left fielder
Graeme Zaparzynski each added a pair of hits to The Rock's Game 1 attack.
Jovanovich smacked his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning, and senior outfielder
Austin Benshadle was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace a seven-hit Rock attack in the second game.
Junior right fielder
Brandon Myers slapped a double to account for the only other extra-base hit in Game 2.
The Rock wasted no time taking command of Saturday's first game.
After Constantino retired Clarion in order in the top of the first inning, SRU scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles by Kengor and sophomore third baseman
Jake Nogalo, a stolen base by each player and an errant throw on Nogalo's theft plated the first run before senior first baseman
John Shaffer's groundout allowed Nogalo to score.
The hosts extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the second that was manufactured from a leadoff walk by Zaparzynski, Kengor's first double and a wild pitch that allowed Zaparzynski to scamper home.
An infield single by Jovanovich, a Clarion error and an RBI single by Faretta accounted for SRU's fourth run and gave The Rock a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Back-to-back singles by Faretta and Zaparzynski to open the bottom of the fifth and Kengor's second double of the game produced the fifth and final Rock run after Clarion had recorded a tally in the top of the fifth on a walk, a hit and a Rock error.
In Game 2, The Rock broke a scoreless tie with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning and added two tallies in the fourth, keyed by an RBI single by Benshadle and a sacrifice fly by Kengor, before Jovanovich's circuit clout closed out the scoring.
The Rock, who ended a string of eight consecutive PSAC-West games Saturday, are scheduled to host West Liberty (W. Va.) in a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader Monday at Critchfield Park.
Weather permitting, Monday's games will be the fifth and sixth in a string of eight consecutive home games for The Rock.
SRU is scheduled to close out the homestand next Saturday, April 6, with a 1 p.m. twinbill vs. nationally-ranked Seton Hill before meeting the Griffins in a nine-inning single game the following day in Greensburg.
