SUTHERLAND, Va. – Junior center fielder
Jake Weibley (top photo) smacked a three-run home run and scored two runs, while sophomore third baseman
Jake Nogalo was 4-for-4 with two runs scored Sunday morning to lead Slippery Rock University to a 5-3 win over Mansfield University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference interdivisional baseball action at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.
Junior shortstop
Will Kengor added a pair of singles to The Rock's 10-hit offensive attack that backed a strong pitching effort by starter
Kyle Schneider.
Schneider struck out eight, walked one and allowed one unearned run on two hits in the first six innings to pick up his second win in as many starts this spring.
A sophomore right-hander, Schneider has not allowed an earned run in his first 13 innings pitched this season while striking out 11, walking only two and yielding seven hits.
Junior right-hander
John Kovalik pitched the final inning Sunday to pick up The Rock's first save of the season. He struck out one and allowed two hits after entering the game with the bases-loaded and no outs in the top of the ninth and final inning.
Sophomore southpaw
Anton Constantino relieved Schneider at the start of the seventh inning and was charged with two earned runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one in two-plus innings of work.
Weibley's roundtripper came with no outs in the bottom of the third inning after Mansfield had taken a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top half of that frame.
Nogalo (left photo) opened The Rock third with a double to left-center field and moved to third on a single to right center by senior second baseman
Matt Curtis before both runners trotted home on Weibley's blast over the left-center field fence.
Weibley also scored The Rock's fourth run of the game, which proved to be the game-winner, in the bottom of the fifth. He was hit by a pitch leading off the inning, went to second on a single by Kengor to right field and scored on junior designated hitter
Kevin Jovanovich's RBI single through the left side of the infield.
SRU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Nogalo led off the inning with a single, his fourth hit of the game, and then moved around the bases on a passed ball, sacrifice bunt by Curtis and another passed ball.
Mansfield loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth inning, scored two runs and had the bases loaded again with two outs before the rally was snuffed out by a diving catch by Rock left fielder
Graeme Zaparzynski for the final out of the game.
The Rock had little time to catch their breath as they quickly returned to the field Sunday afternoon to complete a suspended game vs. Bloomsburg. SRU trailed by a 2-1 score when action was halted at the end of three innings Saturday afternoon due to darkness.
Following the completion of the suspended game, SRU turns its attention to a three-game weekend series at Shippensburg, which took a 6-1 record into a single game Sunday vs. Concord. The Rock and Red Raiders are scheduled to play a twinbill Saturday, March 9, followed by a nine-inning single game the following day.
