LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Junior center fielder
Jake Weibley had three hits, including a solo home run in Game 2, Thursday afternoon to lead the Slippery Rock University attack in a doubleheader split with hosting Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division baseball action at Foundation Field.
Weibley had two of The Rock's six hits in a 3-0 Game 1 victory. His Game 2 circuit clout was one of two smacked by The Rock, who blew a 3-0 lead and suffered a 7-3 loss in Game 2.
Senior designated hitter
John Shaffer clobbered a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to jump start SRU to its Game 2 win.
The home runs were the third hit this season by Shaffer and Weibley, who share the team lead.
Thursday's split was the second in as many doubleheaders vs. Lock Haven and gave SRU a 15-6 overall record and a 2-2 PSAC-West mark.
Lock Haven, which snapped a four-game Rock win streak with a come-from-behind, 4-3 win last Sunday at Pullman Park in Butler, stood 6-10 overall, 2-2 against division rivals, following Thursday's action.
Thursday's games were the first of six consecutive PSAC-West contests SRU is scheduled to play in the span of three days. The Rock are slated to entertain Clarion in 1 p.m. doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park.
The Rock and Lock Haven battled to a scoreless draw in the first five innings of Thursday's first game before SRU scored two runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to record the win.
Senior second baseman
Matt Curtis got the sixth-inning rally started with a base on balls, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop
Will Kengor and scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by
Jake Nogalo. A sophomore third baseman, Nogalo then scored from second base on an RBI double by junior first baseman
Kevin Jovanovich.
Weibley led off The Rock seventh with a single, went to second on a Lock Haven error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior left fielder
Graeme Zaparzynski and scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Curtis.
The late-inning rally gave Rock starting pitcher
Garret Peterson his third win of the season against no losses. A sophomore right-hander, Peterson allowed only one hit, struck out five and walked three in five innings.
Junior right-handed relief specialist
John Kovalik worked out of jams in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to record his team-best fifth save of the season. Kovalik allowed two hits, walked two and struck out one in the final two innings.
Nogalo slapped a one-out single in the top of the first inning of Game 2 to set the table for Shaffer's two-run round-tripper before Weibley led off the second with his home run to make it a 3-0 game.
Undaunted, Lock Haven scored two runs on two hits in the bottom half of that inning to trim the margin to 3-2, scored two unearned tallies in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead and added three insurance runs in the sixth.
Trailing 4-3, SRU threatened to tie or regain the lead in the top of the sixth by getting two runners on base with one out. The rally was short-lived, though, as Lock Haven starting and winning pitcher Nick Cummings induced an infield-fly out and a ground out from the next two Rock hitters.
The Rock then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh before LHU relief pitcher Joe Nestor recorded a swinging strikeout and flyout to slam the door on SRU's comeback effort.
In addition to the home runs by Shaffer and Weibley, Nogalo had a pair of singles to highlight a seven-hit Rock attack in Game 2.
Redshirt freshman right-hander
Geoff Sanner (0-1) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief of Rock starter
Mike Dunn.
Sanner allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits, struck out one and walked one in two innings after Dunn yielded two earned runs on four hits and walked four in the first three and two-thirds innings.
Junior right-hander
Ryan Oglesby allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one in the final one-third of an inning.
