Balanced attack carries Rock men past Edinboro, 70-60

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University rode a balanced scoring attack to a 70-60 win over visiting Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men's basketball action in Morrow Field House.

Senior forward Devin Taylor scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the winning attack, while senior frontliners Gerald Brooks and Luiz Santos both recorded a “double-double.”

Brooks scored 11 points and snared 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Santos had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and also blocked three shots.

The Rock (17-6 overall, 14-5 PSAC), who with the win avenged a 62-59 loss Jan. 26 in Edinboro, also got solid efforts from their backcourt. Senior Darious Clark added nine points and five rebounds, senior Aubin Reeves chipped in eight points and four assists, senior John Bayardelle scored seven points and junior Sa'Quan Davis contributed seven points.

Jay Fletcher led the Edinboro (15-8, 11-8) attack with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Isaiah Prince and Will Marrow II each added 11 points and Xavier Churnac chipped in 10 points.

Edinboro junior center Bryan Theriot, who entered the game ranked third in the PSAC in both scoring (20 points per game) and rebounding (9.9 per game), was held to seven points and four rebounds.

Saturday's win, The Rock's second in the span of four days, kept the Green and White tied with Gannon (20-5, 14-5) for second place in the division standings.

The gap between those two teams and division-leading Indiana, Pa. (19-4, 15-4) is now only one game, though, after Mercyhurst (15-10, 11-8) upset the 11th-ranked Crimson Hawks, 57-48, Saturday afternoon in Erie.

Gannon beat Clarion 67-48 and California, Pa. downed Lock Haven 79-65 in other PSAC-West action Saturday afternoon.

Edinboro and Mercyhurst are tied for fourth place in the division standings, two games ahead of sixth-place California (10-13, 9-10), which hosts The Rock in a 7:30 p.m. game Wednesday.

Following Wednesday's game, The Rock face the two teams challenging them for the division championship. The Green and White close out their regular-season home schedule next Saturday, Feb. 23, with a 3 p.m. game vs. IUP, then finish the regular season with a 7:30 p.m. game Feb. 27 at Gannon.

The Rock led for the final 27 and a half minutes of Saturday's game vs. California after the teams had battled to a 17-17 stalemate in the first 12-plus minutes.

The score was tied on four occasions and the lead changed hands three times in the opening minutes before Santos (left photo) put The Rock ahead for good with an old-fashioned three-point play as part of a 9-0 Rock run.

SRU scored the final seven points of the first half to take a nine-point, 38-29, advantage into the intermission and put together an 11-4 run in the first three and a half minutes of the second half to stretch its lead to 49-33 with 16:15 left to play.

The Rock held their largest lead of the game, a 17-point (62-45) advantage, with 8:30 remaining. Five minutes later, Edinboro had trimmed the gap to nine points, 64-55, but The Rock responded with a 6-1 run to hold a 14-point (70-56) lead with one minute left to play.

SRU made 39% (27 of 70) of its field-goal attempts in the game, including a 32% (6 of 19) showing from beyond the 3-point arc, and canned 10 of 14 (71%) free throws.

Edinboro made 35% (20 of 57) of its field-goal tries with a 6-for-23 (26%) effort from long range and sank 14 of 20 (70%) free throws.

The Rock, for the 22nd time in 23 games this winter, won the rebounding battle by a 50-37 margin and were on the low side of a 17-15 turnover comparison.

SRU outscored Edinboro by a 36-12 margin in the paint, 23-10 on points off turnovers and 18-5 in second-chance points.

Notes: Taylor, a third-year member of The Rock program, is now only four points shy of becoming the 22nd player in SRU men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. He ranks 14th in career rebounds with 656 … With his three blocked shots Saturday, which improved his season total to 39, Santos moved into sixth place on SRU's single-season rejections list. Santos, a second-year Rock player, is also tied with Taylor for sixth place on the career blocked shots list with 66 … Clark hit one 3-point shot Saturday and, in the process, took over ninth place on SRU's single-season treys list with 55 this winter.

Playoff picture: A Rock win Wednesday in California assures the Green and White, who are making their third consecutive trip to the postseason competition, of hosting at least one PSAC tournament game … The top two teams in the division standings at the end of regular-season competition Feb. 27 earn first-round byes and host a quarterfinal game March 5. The No. 3 and 4 teams in the division host a first-round game March  2, the winner of which goes on the road for a quarterfinal game. The top-seeded PSAC-West team at the conclusion of the quarterfinal round hosts the conference semifinal and final games March 8 and 9 … California became the sixth and final PSAC-West team to clinch a berth in the PSAC Championship tournament with its win Saturday. The Vulcans will join SRU, IUP, Gannon, Edinboro and Mercyhurst in the single-elimination competition.
