Rock men roll past Lock Haven, 94-76

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  Slippery Rock University rode a five-player double-figure scoring effort to an easy 94-76 win over visiting Lock Haven University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men's basketball action in Morrow Field House.

The win, coupled with Gannon's 57-54 loss Wednesday night at Edinboro, moved The Rock (16-6 overall, 13-5 PSAC) into a tie for second place in the PSAC-Western Division standings.

The Rock and Gannon (19-5, 13-5) trail division-leading Indiana, Pa. (18-3, 15-3) by two games with five games left on the 2012-13 regular-season schedule.

Edinboro (15-7, 11-7), which invades Morrow Field House for a 3 p.m. game Saturday vs. SRU, is in fourth place, two games behind The Rock and Gannon.

Mercyhurst (14-10 10-8) is in fifth place, followed by California, Pa. (9-13, 8-10).

Wednesday's loss was the 12th consecutive suffered by Lock Haven (5-16, 3-15). The Bald Eagles began the night tied with Clarion (6-16, 4-14) for seventh place, but fell into sole possession of last place in the eight-team division with their loss and Clarion's 78-51 win over Mercyhurst.

Indiana defeated California by a 70-53 score in the other PSAC-West game played Wednesday night.

Senior guard Darious Clark scored a team-high 19 points for SRU in its win over Lock Haven, while senior forward Gerald Brooks (pictured) recorded his fifth “double-double” of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Brooks also handed out four assists.

Senior guard John Bayardelle, junior guard Sa'Quan Davis and senior forward Devin Taylor each chipped in 10 points for The Rock.

Wali Hepburn, the PSAC's leading scorer at 21.4 points per game, finished Wednesday's game with 22 points to take game-high scoring honors. Kasheef Festus added 21 points, Terrell Johnson contributed 13 points and Dave Garcia chipped in 10 points for Lock Haven.

Lock Haven played The Rock on even terms in the first five-plus minutes of the game before the hosts scored 10 unanswered points to take a 23-12 lead with 14:15 left in the first half.

The Rock's lead was never less than eight points the rest of the opening stanza. A 3-point bomb by senior guard Aubin Reeves from behind the halfcourt line at the buzzer gave SRU a 48-32 halftime advantage.

Lock Haven closed the gap to nine points, 60-51, with 12:30 left to play before The Rock pulled away again.

SRU held its largest lead of the night, a 24-point (91-67) advantage, with three minutes left to play in the game.

The Rock finished the game with a 49% (36 of 73) efficiency on its field-goal attempts with a 35% (7 of 20) showing from 3-point range. The hosts hit 15 of 19 (79%) free throws, held a 42-32 rebounding advantage and were on the lower side of a 13-9 turnover comparison.

Lock Haven shot 47% (25 of 53) from the field, 42% (5 of 12) from 3-point range and made 21 of 32 (66%) free throws.

SRU outscored LHU by a 48-26 margin “in the paint,” a 22-7 margin on second-chance points and a 41-4 in points by non-starters.

Wednesday's game marked the 21st time in 22 games this winter that The Rock, who entered the game with a nation-best +12.8 rebounding margin, “out-boarded” their opponents … Conversely, with Lock Haven's 32-19 advantage in free throw opportunities Wednesday night, Rock foes have outshot SRU by a 68-37 margin the last two games. All told, Rock foes have shot 461 free throws in 22 games compared to 447 chances for SRU … Wednesday's win was the school-record 90th recorded by The Rock in Kevin Reynolds' five seasons as the Green and White's head coach … Brooks' rebound total Wednesday was two shy of his career-best mark set Feb. 2 at IUP, a program for which he earned three All-PSAC-West honors from 2006-09 … Taylor enters Saturday's game vs. Edinboro 19 points shy of becoming the 22nd player in Rock men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points … Saturday's game will be part of the PSAC's “Hooping for a Cure” event to promote breast cancer awareness. Any fan wearing pink to the game will be admitted free. Two raffles will be held during the women's/men's doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. with the women's game. All proceeds will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in honor of the late North Carolina State women's basketball coach.
