3-pronged attack propels Rock men past Cheyney, 94-70

CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team rode a three-pronged scoring attack to a 94-70 win over hosting Cheyney University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action Saturday afternoon.

The senior trio of Maurice Lewis-Briggs, Josh Martin and Tabari Perry combined to score 73 points to outscore the entire Cheyney team and pave the way for The Rock to record their second consecutive victory and their 10th win in 13 tries this winter.

Lewis-Briggs scored a season- and game-high 32 points and snared a game-high seven rebounds, Martin scored a season-high 24 points and handed out five assists and Perry finished with 17 points.

Senior forward Deshawn Curtis, the No. 2 scorer in the conference with a 21.3 points per game average heading into the game, scored 27 points Saturday to lead the Cheyney attack.

Eugene Lett added 13 points for the Wolves, who suffered their third consecutive loss and saw their season record fall to 2-9.

The Rock finished the game with a red-hot 61% (31 of 51) efficiency from the field with a 5-of-15 showing from 3-point range and sank 27 of 32 (84%) free throws.

SRU made 65% (17 of 26) of its field-goal attempts in the second half of action.

Cheyney made 38% (21 of 55) of its shots from the field in the game with a 5-of-18 (28%) showing from 3-point range and sank 23 of 27 (85%) free throws.

Each team recorded 28 rebounds in the game with The Rock on the low end of an 14-11 turnover comparison.

The Rock and Wolves battled nip and tuck for the first two minutes before SRU went on a 10-2 run to take a 14-7 lead with 14:30 left to play in the first half.

Cheyney narrowed the margin to four points, 14-10, a little over a minute later before The Rock went on a  24-4 run to take a 38-14 lead with 5:34 remaining before halftime. SRU scored 15 unanswered points in a two-minute span to key that decisive outburst.

The Rock led by a 46-24 margin with 2:15 left in the half before Cheyney closed the first half with a string of seven unanswered points to narrow the margin to 46-31 at intermission.

Lewis-Briggs and Martin were a two-man wrecking crew against Cheyney in the opening half of action as they each scored 15 first-half points. Curtis scored 11 of Cheyney's 31 first-half points.

SRU shot 56% (14 of 25) from the field with a 3-for-9 effort from 3-point range and sank 15 of 17 (88%) free throws in opening 20 minutes.

Cheyney made 35% (10 of 29) of its action shots with a 3-for-10 showing from long range and sank eight of 10 free throws in the first half.

After trailing by 15 points at the intermission, Cheyney never closed the gap to less than 13 points in the final 20 minutes. The Rock held a pair of 26-point advantages in the final two minutes before recording the 24-point victory.

SRU is idle until Jan. 3, when it visits Millersville for a 3 p.m. crossover game. The Rock are at Shippensburg for another crossover game the following day to close out a three-game road trip before hosting Kutztown in the sixth and final interdivisional game Jan. 8 (7:30 p.m. tipoff).

Notes:

Lewis-Briggs was the first Rock player to score 30 or more points in a game since Darious Clark had 33 in SRU's Jan. 12, 2013 win over Kutztown in Morrow Field House … Saturday's game marked the fourth time this season Lewis-Briggs scored 20 or more points in a game and the second time Martin had 20 or more points in a  game. Lewis-Briggs scored 20, 21 and 21 in the second, third and fourth games of the season, respectively, wins over Shepherd, Ohio Valley and Clarion. Martin scored 20 points in SRU's Nov. 23 win at California (Pa.) ... Saturday's win gave The Rock their sixth double-digit win total in as many seasons under head coach Kevin Reynolds' leadership. The last time SRU won 10 or more games in six consecutive seasons was 1993-94, the final season of a seven-year string under Bob Barlett … Saturday's win was the fifth consecutive recorded by The Rock in head-to-head meeting with Cheyney … Saturday's win was The Rock's fourth in as many road games this winter and improved Reynolds' road record to 38-31 (.551) … The Rock are 23-14 (.622) against PSAC-East teams under Reynolds' leadership.
