SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior guard
Josh Martin scored a game-high 18 points and senior center
Maurice Lewis-Briggs added 16 tallies Saturday afternoon to lead Slippery Rock University to a 75-55 win over visiting Lake Erie College in non-conference men's basketball action in Morrow Field House.
The win extended The Rock's current win streak to six games and improved the Green and White's season record to 6-1.
SRU puts those marks and a 2-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division record on the line Wednesday when it hosts Gannon University (1-2 overall, 1-1 PSAC-W) in an 8 p.m. division game.
Lake Erie, a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, suffered its third consecutive loss Saturday and saw its overall record fall to 3-3.
SRU finished the game with a 26-of-56 (46%) efficiency on its field-goal attempts, including a 6-of -7 (35%) showing from 3-point range. The Rock made 17 of 24 (71%) free throws.
Lake Erie shot 37% (19 of 51) from the field with a 5-of-16 (31%) showing from beyond the arc and made 12 of 21 (57%) free throws.
Martin also grabbed five rebounds, handed out a game-high five assists and blocked two shots, while Lewis-Briggs snared seven rebounds.
Junior forwards
Kelvin Dixon and
Antonio Butler tied for game-high rebounding honors with nine each to lead The Rock to a 44-26 advantage on the backboards. Each team committed 13 turnovers.
Dixon scored nine points in the winning effort and, thus, finished one point and one rebound shy of his first "double-double" of the season. Junior forward
Erik Raleigh also scored nine points in a substitute role while senior point guard
Sa'Quan Davis chipped in eight points.
Garrick Sims and Riley Thomas each scored 17 points to lead Lake Erie's attack.
The Rock started the game slowly but eventually got its running game going to breeze to victory.
Lewis-Briggs laid in the first two points of the game to give The Rock the first lead, but Lake Erie responded with a string of nine unanswered points to hold a seven-point lead after three-plus minutes of action.
The Storm held the lead until the 9:45 mark of the first half when a layup by redshirt sophomore
Jordan Grady knotted the score at 15-15.
Neither team scored for the next two minutes before senior forward
Tabari Perry's layup gave The Rock a lead it would never relinquish.
The Rock held a 38-27 lead at the intermission, which matched its largest first-half advantage.
Lake Erie never trimmed the margin to less than eight points in the final 20 minutes of action, with SRU holding its largest lead of the game, 75-52, with 30 seconds left to play. The Rock held a double-digit lead throughout the final 18 minutes of action.
