SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior forward
Devin Taylor recorded game-high totals of 21 points and 16 rebounds Saturday night to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to a 68-59 victory over hosting Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” action.
The win was SRU's fourth consecutive and improved the Green and White's season records to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in PSAC action.
The Rock stand alone atop the PSAC-Western Division standings, one game ahead of Gannon, Indiana (Pa.) and Mercyhurst, all of which have 5-2 conference records.
Saturday's win set the stage for The Rock's next game, a duel Friday (Jan. 11) with defending conference champion East Stroudsburg, which also owns 9-2 overall and 6-1 PSAC records and sits alone atop the PSAC-Eastern Division standings. Tipoff in Morrow Field House is set for 7:30 p.m.
Shippensburg suffered its eighth consecutive loss and saw its season records fall to 2-9 overall, 0-7 in PSAC action.
Taylor, who recorded his team-best sixth “double-double” of the season, was the only Rock player to finish the game with either a double-digit scoring or rebounding total. Junior guard

Gerald Brooks had eight points and eight rebounds.

Reggie Charles scored 20 points, Dylan Edgar had 15 points and eight rebounds and Joe Lococo finished with 10 points to lead the Shippensburg attack.
The Rock led virtually buzzer to buzzer, with the exception of a 5-4 Shippensburg edge with 17:15 left to play in the first half.
But, for the second consecutive evening, The Rock, who held off Millersville one night earlier for a 69-64 victory, had to weather a late rally by a host team in order to secure the win.
SRU held a 15-point, 55-40, advantage with eight minutes left to play before Shippensburg clawed its way back to trim the margin to only five points in the final two minutes.
The final Shippensburg rally cut The Rock lead to 62-57 before SRU scored six of the game's final eight points to set the final margin.
The teams battled to a 23-23 stalemate in the first 14 minutes of action before SRU went on an 8-0 run to take a 31-23 lead with 2:45 left before halftime.
The Rock held a 33-29 advantage at the intermission and scored the first six second-half points to take a 40-29 lead with 17 minutes remaining.
Shippensburg closed to within six points, 46-40, at the 13-minute mark, only to see The Rock run off nine unanswered points to take the aforementioned 55-40 lead.
The Rock finished the game with a 33% (22-66) efficiency on its field-goal attempts, made five of 25 shots from 3-point range and canned 19 of 24 (79%) of their free throws.
SRU, by virtue of its 49-34 advantage on the backboards Saturday night, have now outrebounded its opponent in 10 of 11 games this winter.
The Rock also had the lower turnover total Saturday night, albeit by a 14-13 edge.
Shippensburg finished the game with a 39% (20-51) efficiency on its field-goal attempts, made four of 12 shots from 3-point range and sank 15 of 23 (65%) free throws.
Notes: With a total of 29 rebounds in the wins over Millersville and East Stroudsburg, Taylor improved his three-year Rock total to 556, which ranks 18th on SRU's career chart … Taylor, with 38 total points at Millersville and East Stroudsburg, has now scored 834 points while wearing the Green and White and needs 166 points to become the school's 22nd 1,000-point scorer … Saturday's win was the 83rd recorded by The Rock in five seasons under head coach
Kevin Reynolds (83-43 record). That win total is tied for the third-best five-year mark in Rock history. Rock teams coached by Mel Hankinson (1971-73) and Cliff Wettig (1973-75) from 1970-75 compiled an 83-46 cumulative record. The all-time best win five-year win total by Rock teams is an 89-55 mark compiled by Bob Barlett-coached squads between 1987-92.
