OLEAN, N.Y. -- Hosting St. Bonaventure University won four singles matches and two of three doubles matches Sunday to hand Slippery Rock University a 5-2 defeat in women's tennis action.
Sunday's loss to the NCAA Division I Bonnies (3-1), coached by 1987 SRU graduate Michael Bates, was the first suffered in dual-match competition this season by the Division II Rock (5-1).
The Rock's No. 3 team of
Janelle Krantz and
Samantha Bruggeman won an 8-1 decision to deny St. Bonaventure a sweep of the three doubles matches, but the two Bonnies' doubles wins gave them the team point awarded under Division I rules.
Bruggeman also won the No. 6 singles match by a 6-2, 6-3 score. The other Rock point came on
Lauren Coggins' three-set, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 12-10 decision in the No. 5 singles match.
Elisabeth Yetiskul lost a three-set (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) decision in the No. 3 singles match, while Krantz dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (3) decision in the No. 4 match.
The Rock returns to action Friday, when they will take on Division III Carnegie Mellon University in a 6:30 p.m. in Monroeville.
