SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior guard
Darious Clark celebrated his first Rock start with a game-high, 21-point scoring effort Monday night to lead Slippery Rock University to a hard-fought, 62-56 men's basketball win over visiting La Roche College in Morrow Field House.
Clark stepped in for injured senior forward
Devin Taylor and made eight of 10 field goal attempts, including a 2-for-4 showing from 3-point range, and three of four free throws as The Rock won for the second time in as many games this winter. Clark also grabbed six rebounds.
Senior guard
John Bayardelle (left picture) had 11 points and game-high marks of nine rebounds and five assists in a supporting role for The Rock. Junior forward
Tabari Perry added 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior center
Luiz Santos also snared seven rebounds while blocking three shots.
La Roche (1-1) was led in scoring by Lionel Perkins' 13 points. Derek Barber-Richards added 12 points and David Jackson had nine points and a team-best six rebounds for the Redhawks.
The NCAA Division II Rock and Division III Redhawks were tied at 30-30 at halftime and battled tooth-and-nail throughout the game before SRU finally prevailed.
SRU shot a very respectable 49% (24-49) from the field with a 3-of-13 sub-total on 3-point shots and sank 11 of 16 (69%) free throw attempts. The hosts also held a 41-30 rebounding advantage but committed 17 turnovers, which led to 11 La Roche points.
La Roche made 34% (22-64) of its action shots, hit seven of 24 (29%) of its long-range shots and sank five off 11 (46%) free throws. The Redhawks committed only eight turnovers, but those miscues led to 10 Rock points. The guests outscored SRU 19-8 "off the bench."
The Rock trailed for a brief time early in the game thanks to 3-point baskets made on back-to-back possessions by the Redhawks.
SRU quickly recovered and never trailed in the final 35-plus minutes of action, but the hosts also never really put the game away.
The Rock held a pair of five-point leads midway through the first half of action, only to see the Redhawks claw their way back.
The largest Rock lead of the game came with 2:20 left to play when Clark scored on a layup to give the hosts a 60-51 advantage.
Monday's game was the only home date among the first six games on The Rock's 2012-13 schedule. SRU, which won a 70-48 season-opening decision last Tuesday at regional rival Ohio Valley (W. Va.), opens a four-game road trip Saturday (3 p.m. start) at Lake Erie College in suburban Cleveland, Ohio.
The next Rock home game is Dec. 18 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” rival West Chester University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Notes: Taylor, who began his collegiate career as an all-conference performer at La Roche, missed Monday's game after sustaining an injury while attempting a slam dunk in the season-opening win over Ohio Valley … The Rock is now 9-0 all-time against La Roche, unbeaten in five home openers and owns a 43-18 record against non-PSAC-Western Division rivals under fifth-year head
Kevin Reynolds … Monday's win improved Reynolds' career record at SRU to 76-41.
