Rock rolls Ohio Valley in opener, 70-48

Slippery Rock jumped out to an 8-2 lead early and never looked back en route to a 70-48 season-opening win at Ohio Valley University Tuesday night.

VIENNA, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a convincing 70-48 win on the road at Atlantic Region rival Ohio Valley University Tuesday night.

Slippery Rock (1-0) jumped out to an 8-2 lead just 2:13 into the game and never looked back en route to handing Ohio Valley (1-2) its second loss of the year.

The Rock placed three players in double figures, led by a game-high 19-point effort from Tabari Perry, who shot 8-of-12 from the field and also grabbed six rebounds. Devin Taylor added a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Darious Clark added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Aubin Reeves chipped in nine points and handed out four assists and Jermaine Edwards added seven points and five rebounds off the bench.

Slippery Rock picked up the year where it left off last season in terms of rebounding margin when The Rock led the nation in that department. SRU was dominant on the glass Tuesday, outrebounding Ohio Valley by a 57-38 margin.

The Rock finished the game shooting 37.7 percent from the field, connecting on 26-of-69 attempts, including 4-of-12 from beyond the 3-point arc (33.3%). The visitors shot 14-of-20 from the free throw line (70.0%) and turned the ball over 18 times in the game.

Ohio Valley shot just 29.9 percent from the field, hitting 20-of-67 attempts, including 2-of-16 from long range (12.5%). The Fighting Scots were 6-of-10 at the free throw line (60%) and tuened the ball over 18 times.

Ashton Brown led the hosts with 17 points and five rebounds, while Mustafa Helal added nine points and eight rebounds and Chris Baker chipped in seven points.

Ohio Valley scored the first two points of the game before Slippery Rock went on an 8-0 run to lead 8-2 with 17:47 to play in the opening half, a lead the visitors would never relinquish.

The Scots hung around throughout the first half with the largest margin growing to 13 points at 32-19 with 2:56 to play before the intermission. They closed the half on a 5-2 run to trail 34-24 at the break.

Slippery Rock put the game away with a 15-4 run over the first four minutes of the second half to open up a 21-point lead, 49-28. Ohio Valley battled back to within 13 points at 52-39 with 9:09 to play, but would get no closer as The Rock went on the attack again, pushing it out to a game-high 24 point margin at 69-45 with 4:04 to play.

Slippery Rock would score just one point over the final 4:04 and neither team would score in the final 2:31.

The Rock will open the home portion of its schedule Monday night, Nov. 19, when LaRoche College visits Morrow Field House for a 7 p.m. non-conference game. That contest will be the only home game for SRU for nearly a month, as the team will not return home again until Dec. 18.
